Officer: Shooting Should Have Halted White Sox Game

Sep 22, 2023 7:13 AM

A Chicago White Sox game last month where two women were wounded by gunfire should have been stopped or delayed, the city's interim police superintendent says.

The Aug. 25 game against the Oakland Athletics was allowed to continue without interruption after the two women were shot near Section 161 of Guaranteed Rate Field because of "miscommunication" on the protocol for notifying Major League Baseball.

"We've taken some steps to make sure that ... we have the right people in place to delay or stop completely a game like that, so it won't happen again," interim police superintendent Fred Waller said.

"We did not know exactly what we had on our hands. We didn't think it was an active shooter. But we didn't know."

Police still don't know whether the bullets came from inside or outside Guaranteed Rate Field and likely will never be certain, Waller said.

Waller was told Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott had called for the game to be stopped and that police, team officials and the private security firm hired by the Sox had started looking at video.

"A mistake was made because the [game] was not stopped," Waller said.

John Angelos: Orioles Will Be At Camden Yards For Another 30 Years

Sep 19, 2023 8:22 AM

John Angelos indicated plans to remain at Camden Yards for the long-term after the Baltimore Orioles clinched their first playoff berth since 2016.

"The Orioles have a 70-year partnership with the city and the state, and Camden Yards more than 30. And we're going to have 30 more. That's a given," Angelos, the club's CEO, said.

It was just last September that the Orioles hired an investment bank to "assess the prospects for selling the team."

The Orioles' lease at Camden Yards expires at the end of this season.

Rays Complete Deal For New Stadium In St. Petersburg

Sep 19, 2023 8:18 AM

The Tampa Bay Rays are expected to announce the completion of a deal for a new stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Tuesday, according to a report.

The construction of the 30,000-seat domed stadium, which is set to open in 2028 and is estimated to cost over $1.2 billion, should end speculation about the Rays leaving for another city.

The Rays' current 30-year lease at the domed Tropicana Field ends in 2027.

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg told the Tampa Bay Times earlier this month that the organization expected to "pay for half or more" of the cost for the stadium. The remainder of the cost will be contributed by the city of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County.
