Nevada Lawmakers Consider A's Stadium Financing At Hearing

May 30, 2023 8:20 AM

Nevada lawmakers questioned whether a proposal to subsidize a new Major League stadium with tax credits and bonds would further boost Las Vegas' economy, or simply serve as a handout that would strain resources.

In a committee hearing on Monday, the Republican governor's chief of staff and the Democratic treasurer both said it would provide tax revenue and well-paying jobs while further aiding Las Vegas' transformation into a sports city.

However, lawmakers questioned whether an A's stadium on the site of the Tropicana Las Vegas would be worth it.

The meeting was likely the only before a vote on the proposal to help fund the Oakland A's potential stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.

"Regular citizens see us having a conversation and a discussion around funding a stadium," said state Sen. Dina Neal (D-North Las Vegas). "Yet, we don't have enough revenue to fund and give a 20% (salary) increase to teachers."

Nevada Legislature Sets $380M Price To Build A's Stadium

May 27, 2023 1:13 PM

A bill introduced late Friday in the Nevada Legislature would give the Oakland Athletics up to $380 million for a potential 30,000-seat, $1.5 billion retractable-roof stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.

The bulk of the public funding would come from $180 million in transferable tax credits from the state and $120 million in county bonds, which can vary based on interest rate returns. Clark County also would contribute $25 million in credit toward infrastructure costs.

Owners Could Vote On A's Prospective Move To Vegas In June

May 26, 2023 1:22 AM

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says a vote on the Oakland Athletics' prospective move to Las Vegas could take place when MLB owners meet June 13-15 in New York.

"It's possible that a relocation vote could happen as early as June," Manfred said Thursday at Milwaukee during his tour of major league stadiums to speak with players. "It's very difficult to have a timeline for Oakland until there's actually a deal to be considered. There is a relocation process internally they need to go through, and we haven't even started that process."

Report: A's Move To Vegas Could Be Held Up Over Money

May 19, 2023 9:15 AM

The Oakland Athletics' move to Las Vegas could be held up over a request for public funding, according to a report.

Earlier this week it was announced that the A's agreed with Bally's Corporation to build a new ballpark on the city's famous strip. The deal also requested $395 million in public financing.

Nevada lawmakers have not yet introduced legislation to bring the A's to Las Vegas because they are only willing to contribute up to $195 million in transferable tax credits for stadium construction funding, not the full $395 million the team is seeking, sources told the Nevada Independent.

The current plan is for the A's to begin play in their new Vegas ballpark in 2027.

A's Considering Multiple Potential Stadium Sites In Las Vegas

May 9, 2023 8:16 AM

The Oakland Athletics have reengaged with various landowners as they look into potential stadium sites in the Las Vegas area, according to a report.

Club officials have recently been in contact with land holders at multiple Vegas-area locations that had previously been under consideration.

The A's already announced a land purchase agreement for 49 acres west of the Vegas strip three weeks ago.

The Nevada Independent report suggests the A's are considering alternatives as backup plans.

A's Near Deadline For $500M Request For Las Vegas Stadium

May 4, 2023 7:57 AM

The Oakland Athletics recently announced that they had entered into an agreement to purchase land in Nevada close to the Las Vegas strip.

However, it appears as though the A's are already running behind schedule. The club has yet to submit definitive plans to Nevada lawmakers with respect to their desired $500 million tax deferment package.

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager told the Nevada Independent that "if something was going to happen, it really should have been in place last week," as there are only 34 days remaining in the legislature's 120-day session.

The A's lease at the Oakland Coliseum is set to expire after the 2024 season.

Diamondbacks' Kristian Robinson Gets Work Visa, Could Play Soon

May 2, 2023 7:33 AM

Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Kristian Robinson was granted a work visa over the weekend, which gets him closer to playing in minor league games for the first time in nearly four years.

Robinson, who is also dealing with a minor hamstring injury, was a high-profile amateur signee during the 2017-18 international signing period.

Once considered a Top 100 prospect and building block for Arizona, Robinson has been in limbo for the past few years for legal reasons. Robinson pled guilty to what was initially a felony assault charge stemming from an April 2020 incident with a law enforcement officer.
