Manfred: A's Big Turnout Doesn't Change 'A Decade Worth Of Inaction'

Jun 22, 2023 1:33 PM

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says one big turnout by Oakland Athletics fans doesn't change "a decade worth of inaction" as he defended earlier comments about the "reverse boycott" held in protest of the team's proposed move to Las Vegas.

Manfred said he was taken out of context when he sarcastically praised the 27,759 fans for amounting to "almost an average Major League Baseball crowd" for a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on June 13 at the Coliseum.

A's Stadium Deal Wins Final Legislative Approval

Jun 15, 2023 8:22 AM

The Oakland Athletics cleared a major hurdle for their planned relocation to Las Vegas after the Nevada Legislature gave final approval to public funding for a portion of a proposed $1.5 billion stadium.

The deal still needs the governor's signature, and MLB still must approve the A's move from California to the Las Vegas Strip, but both are expected.

The state Assembly approved the final version of the bill with $380 million in taxpayer money on a 25-15 vote after making minor changes to the measure the Senate approved on a 13-8 vote Tuesday.

The A's said in a statement released by the team that they look forward to "Lombardo's signature as our next step" as they "work to bring the Athletics to Las Vegas."

Former Pitcher, Manager Roger Craig Dies At Age 93

Jun 4, 2023 10:59 PM

Roger Craig, a right-handed pitcher for the Dodgers and Mets who became synonymous with the split-finger fastball during his successful career as a pitching coach and manager, has died at age 93.

Craig pitched in the Major Leagues for 12 seasons from 1955-66, logging a 3.83 ERA over 368 career appearances between the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, Mets, Cardinals, Reds and Phillies.

He was appointed the first pitching coach in Padres history in 1969 and later replaced Alvin Dark as San Diego’s manager in 1978.

Craig had a 152-171 record over his two seasons as the Padres’ skipper, but his most successful managerial run came with the Giants, who hired him near the end of their 100-loss season in 1985. Craig instantly engineered an incredible turnaround in San Francisco, transforming the Giants into winners and introducing the iconic catchphrase “Humm Baby” into the Bay Area baseball lexicon.
