Jon Lester Remains Hitless In Major League Career

May 28, 2015 2:17 PM

After going 0-for-2 against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, Jon Lester is now 0-for-59 at the plate during his Major League career.

Lester, who came to the National League this past offseason when he signed with the Chicago Cubs, is 0-for-23 with 15 strikeouts this season. He had been 0-for-36 with the Boston Red Sox and a half-season with the Oakland Athletics.

The left-hander has the most hitless at-bats of any player in history and the most at the start of a career, surpassing the 0-for-57 start for former San Diego Padres pitcher Joey Hamilton.

Bob Buhl went 0-for-70 over the course of an entire season for the Atlanta Braves and Cubs in 1962.

Matt Holliday Has Reached Base In First 43 Games

May 28, 2015 2:06 PM

Matt Holliday set a St. Louis Cardinals record Wednesday by reaching base safely for the 43rd consecutive game to start the season.

It's the longest streak in the National League since 1914.

Derek Jeter set the Major League record with 53 in a row in 1999.

"Yeah, that's cool," Holliday said. "A lot of players have played in the National League. That's pretty good, I guess."

Mark Teixeira Having Success Despite Low BABIP

May 28, 2015 8:02 AM

Mark Teixeira typically gets off to a slow start, but he's been productive for the New York Yankees in April and May.

Teixeira is hitting .243/.365/.588 despite a low batting average on balls in play (.191).

Only Bryce Harper and Nelson Cruz have more home runs than Teixeira's 14 and he's one of only six players in baseball with more walks than strikeouts.

His low BABIP looks odd, but it's also the product of hitting more home runs than singles. Another reason is that Teixeira has refused to adjust to the defensive shifts he sees consistently.

Alex Rodriguez Moves Up All-Time RBI List

May 28, 2015 7:30 AM

Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run home run on Wednesday, giving him 1,995 career RBIs. He passed Lou Gehrig (1,993) and moved into third on the all-time list.

Rodriguez already had moved past Babe Ruth, who is credited with 1,992 career RBIs. Ruth's total is incomplete because the RBI was recognized as an official stat by Elias beginning in 1920. Ruth started playing in 1914.

"It's definitely an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth," Rodriguez said. "It is any player's dream; especially it is even more special to do it here at home at Yankee Stadium."

Next up on the official list for Rodriguez is Barry Bonds at 1,996. Hank Aaron has the all-time lead with 2,297.

Ashton Bardzell, a senior at New Jersey's Ramsey High School, has tied Mike Trout's state record for home runs in a season with 18.

Bardzell could be selected in MLB's First-Year Player Draft next month.

"He's the man. He's the best player in the league right now," Bardzell said. "So I mean, It's an honor."

Trout attended Millville High School in New Jersey.

Padres Lead Majors In Home Runs Allowed

May 21, 2015 7:09 AM

After an offseason of change, the San Diego Padres are a disappointing 20-21 on the season.

Despite playing in a pitcher-friendly home park, the Padres lead the Major Leagues in home runs allowed, which is becoming a real problem for the pitching staff.

San Diego has a home run per fly ball percentage of 17.2%, by far their highest since 2002 (when FanGraphs started tracking the data). The teams that rank right behind him in HR/FB% all play in hitter-friendly home parks (Milwaukee, Toronto and Cincinnati).

The expectation is that some of the long fly balls San Diego has allowed will start to die at the warning track, allowing the Padres to begin accumulating more victories in the process.

Keuchel Off To Best Start For Astros Pitcher Since Clemens

May 21, 2015 6:42 AM

Dallas Keuchel allowed six hits and no earned runs in seven innings against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, improving to 6-0 on the season and lowering his ERA to 1.67.

His run to begin the 2015 season is the best for a Houston Astros pitcher since Roger Clemens opened 9-0 back in 2004.

"I thought he was as sharp as he's been all year early," A.J. Hinch said. "They made him work a couple innings that were long which got him out of there after seven but he really dialed up in a couple innings when they had the bases loaded."

In addition, Keuchel is 8-0 with a 1.79 ERA since an Aug. 21 loss at the New York Yankees, the longest current unbeaten streak by a Major League starter.

Ichiro Ties Babe Ruth On All-Time Hits List

May 19, 2015 7:57 AM

Ichiro Suzuki hit a bloop single in the fifth inning on Monday night, allowing him to tie Babe Ruth for 38th place on the all-time Major League hits list since 1900 with 2,873.

The 41-year-old said he wasn't thinking about the milestone with the Miami Marlins undergoing a managerial change.

"Not with everything that went on today," he said. "I obviously heard about it afterwards. But it's one of those days that I just couldn't think about it."

Suzuki finished 2-for-4 with a walk to boost his season average to .287.

Next up on the all-time hit list is another Hall of Famer, Mel Ott, who has 2,876.

Red Sox Hitting Major League-Worst .206 In May

May 18, 2015 7:35 AM

A lot has been made of the pitching struggles of the Boston Red Sox, but they haven't hit well in the month of May.

They are hitting .206 as a team this month, the worst average in the Major Leagues.

Boston has hit 12 home runs in May, just two more than Bryce Harper. They've scored an average of 2.2 runs per game and have struggled mightily with runners in scoring position.

At .201, they rank at the bottom of the AL with RISP, and only Cincinnati has a lower average in the NL.
