Albert Pujols Passes Mike Schmidt On Home Run List

Jul 21, 2015 6:41 AM

Albert Pujols hit three home runs in one doubleheader on Monday for the Los Angeles Angels.

Pujols now has 549 career home runs, allowing him to pass Mike Schmidt for sole possession of 15th place on the all-time list.

He has also passed Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Willie McCovey, Frank Thomas on the home run list this season.

"At the end of my career -- and I'm going to continue saying this until the last time I wear a uniform -- I'm going to have time to think about it," Pujols said. "It's hard for me to think about it, who I'm passing, who's in front of me, because that's not my main focus. Arte [Moreno, the Angels' owner] brought me here, to the Angels organization, for one thing only, and that's to accomplish a championship for our fans. I'm going to try to do my best."

Jose Fernandez Ties Consecutive Wins Mark

Jul 10, 2015 7:02 AM

Jose Fernandez pitched seven innings Thursday and tied the modern record for most consecutive home victories by a starter to begin a career as the Miami Marlins defeated the Cincinnati Reds.

The right-hander won for the second time in two outings since his return from Tommy John surgery. He allowed six hits, struck out nine and improved to 14-0 in 22 career starts at Marlins Park.

The only other pitcher since 1914 to win his first 14 home decisions as a starter was Johnny Allen of the Yankees in 1932-33.

"It was fantastic. I love it," he said. "Sometimes I look in the stands and see the kids laughing and saying my name, and it's really special. Knowing everything I've been through, I really appreciate it."

Carter Capps Becoming Close To Unhittable

Jul 9, 2015 7:38 AM

Carter Capps threw a pitch to Xander Bogaerts on Tuesday night with a perceived velocity of 105.55 mph, the highest number of any pitch in the Major Leagues this season.

According to Statcast, no pitch has had a smaller flight time than the one Bogaerts actually hit.

Capps drew some controversy back in April because of his estimated release point.

"Capps had some issues with his delivery in the minors," writes Jeff Sullivan. "A couple times in a row, an umpire declared he was throwing illegal pitches, and Capps and the [Miami] Marlins sought league clarification. What Capps was told was that he was okay, so long as he dragged his back foot instead of lifting it in the air. As several have noted, there are parallels between Capps’ delivery and Jordan Walden‘s. Capps hasn’t been in any trouble since, with the league basically signing off on this."

He is now using the delivery in the Majors, but the league office hasn't said anything yet. Among relievers that have thrown at least 20 innings, Capps has a 50% strikeouts rate and 50% contact rate, by far the best in baseball.
