Stanton Becomes Marlins' All-Time HR Leader

Apr 17, 2015 7:22 AM

Giancarlo Stanton hit the 155th home run of his career on Thursday night, making him the franchise leader in the category for the Miami Marlins.

Stanton had been tied with Dan Uggla for the most homers in team history.

"I'll enjoy it later," Stanton said. Referring to Miami's mark this season, he added, "3-7 is the only record I know right now."

Stanton led the National League with 37 homers last year.

Nelson Cruz Extends HR Streak To Five Games

Apr 16, 2015 7:35 AM

Nelson Cruz continued his home run streak on Wednesday night by going deep in his fifth straight game.

Cruz hit a solo home run in the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He has six homers and nine RBIs in the past five games for the Seattle Mariners.

"He's swinging the bat extremely well," Lloyd McClendon said. "He's slowing down, letting the ball travel, he's using the entire field to hit. He's doing a great job for us."

Lester Makes Pickoff Throw For First Time In Two Years

Apr 14, 2015 7:17 AM

Jon Lester threw to first base on Monday night for the first time since April 30, 2013.

The left-hander is relatively quick to the plate, which has limited base stealers the past two seasons. He has allowed just 28 stolen bases in 37 attempts over that span. However, the St. Louis Cardinals stole three bags in his first start with the Chicago Cubs on April 5.

Lester's throw to first on Monday night was errant, suggesting teams may test him more often and that he had a reason not to throw anywhere but home plate over the last two years.

Pujols In Sole Possession Of 18th On Home Run List

Apr 13, 2015 7:32 AM

Albert Pujols hit the 522nd home run of his career on Sunday, moving him into sole possession of 18th place on the all-time home run list.

Pujols moved ahead of Ted Williams, Willie McCovey and Frank Thomas.

"Obviously, it's a great accomplishment, but it's disappointing we got swept by a great ballclub," he said. "It's an honor and a blessing to be in the same name category as those guys. But, at the same time, I've got to stay humble, and do my best to help my team win, and I wasn't able to do that today."

Next on the career list is Jimmie Foxx (534).

A-Rod Hits First Home Run Since 2013

Apr 10, 2015 10:37 AM

The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, but Alex Rodriguez hit a home run for the first time since Sept. 20, 2013.

Rodriguez homered off Toronto's Daniel Norris, the 655th of his career.

"I felt like I needed Google Maps or something to round the bases," Rodriguez said.

"It's been a long, long time. It felt good. We talked about it in spring training; anything that I do this year is going to be kind of a surprise to everyone -- sometimes even myself. That one felt good to get us on the board and start a little momentum."

Tigers Set AL Record With 24 Scoreless Innings

Apr 10, 2015 11:05 AM

The Detroit Tigers set an American League record on Thursday by opening the season with 24 shutout innings.

Detroit didn't allow a run against the Minnesota Twins until the seventh inning of the three-game series.

Minnesota scored in the seventh when Joe Mauer walked and scored on a one-out double by Kennys Vargas and an error by left fielder Yoenis Cespedes.

The longest such streak in the majors since 1912 is 32 innings by the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.

Pujols Hits HR No. 521, Moves Into Tie For 18th All-Time

Apr 9, 2015 8:13 AM

Albert Pujols slugged a two-run home run in the first inning on Wednesday, giving him 521 for his career.

That ties him with Ted Williams, Willie McCovey and Frank Thomas for 18th on the all-time list.

"The ball actually slipped out of my hand," Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma said of the 1-0, chest-high pitch. "I knew right when I released it that the ball was going to be up, and he didn't miss it."

If Pujols hits 30 homers in 2015 -- a number he reached in his first 12 years, but not since 2012 -- he'll reach 550, which is 15th all-time. Next on the list is Jimmie Foxx at 534, followed by Mickey Mantle at 536 and Mike Schmidt at 548.

Adrian Gonzalez Sets Record With Five HRs In Three Games

Apr 9, 2015 8:26 PM

Adrian Gonzalez has hit five home runs through the first three games of the season, a Major League record.

Gonzalez, who homered once in each of his first two games, clubbed a trio of home runs against Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.

"I was able to run into three fastballs and I thank God they were able to go over the fence. It's definitely right up there as a personal feat," Gonzalez said.

It's the first three-homer game of the 32-year-old first baseman's career. Gonzalez homered in four consecutive at-bats dating to Tuesday before his RBI single in the sixth.

"He wasn't bad today, huh?" Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "When you get hot you're just feeling good. You want to ride that streak as long as you can as far as hitting the ball hard."
