Scott Van Slyke took a cab ride on Saturday bound for the Dodgers' game against the Mets at Citi Field. but the trip took a turn for the worse in Manhattan when the outfielder/first baseman's driver slammed on the brakes to avoid another car.

Van Slyke's head hit the partition between the front and back seats, and he emerged with a neck problem. 

Pedroia was activated from the DL on July 17 but struggled. He was hitless in 18 at-bats over his first five games before a 1-for-4 effort Wednesday in Houston.

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer was carted off the field Sunday after a collision with the Brewers' Carlos Gomez, who was attempting to break up a double play.

The players collided in the second inning when Mercer was in front of the second base bag, attempting to tag Gomez, whose right knee appeared to make contact with Mercer's left knee.

Giants outfielder Nori Aoki is expected to begin baseball activity in about two weeks, manager Bruce Bochy said after Saturday's win over the D-Backs.

Aoki has been on the disabled list since June 24 with a small fracture in his right fibula. A recent CT scan showed the bone is 80 percent healed, Bochy said.

Padres outfielder Wil Myers is moving through the strength phase of his rehab and will progress to baseball activities late next week, interim manager Pat Murphy said after Saturday's win over the Rockies.

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz said he intends to see Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday in Pensacola, Florida, for a second opinion on the strained flexor muscle in his forearm.

Buchholz, currently on the 15-day disabled list, went to see Andrews when he had shoulder bursitis in 2013.

A federal lawsuit filed in San Francisco on Monday is trying to force MLB to install netting from foul pole to foul pole to protect spectators from flying bats and balls.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of an A's fan and other season-ticket holders throughout the major leagues, does not ask for money. Instead, it wants commissioner Rob Manfred to extend the screens that typically cover only a few sections behind the plate all the way down the first- and third-base lines.

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is an All-Star for the first time since his 2013 steroid suspension.

Braun was named to the National League All-Star team Sunday to replace injured Cardinals outfielder Matt Holiday.

Dodgers rookie Joe Pederson will replace Holliday in the NL starting lineup.
