Jackie Robinson's Name Misspelled On NYC Road Sign

Feb 28, 2023 8:49 AM

New York City's Department of Transportation missed with a road sign for the Jackie Robinson Parkway that spelled the Baseball Hall of Famer's first name as "Jakie."

The sign spotted Sunday in Queens featured a picture of Robinson, Major League Baseball's first African American player in the modern era, over the words "Jakie Robinson Parkway."

Department of Transportation spokesperson Scott Gastel said the botched sign was replaced Monday.

Feb 28, 2023 8:44 AM

Major League Baseball's average salary rose 14.8% to a record $4.22 million last year.

The rate of increase was the highest since a 17.7% increase in 2000 to $1.61 million.

The average had dropped in each of the previous four seasons before 2022, sparking player anger that was expressed by the union during a 99-day lockout that ended last March.

Tim Anderson Hoping For Extension With White Sox

Feb 27, 2023 8:25 AM

Tim Anderson hopes to sign a long-term contract extension with the Chicago White Sox.

Anderson, 29, will make $12.5 million in 2023, and his contract includes a $14 million club option ($1 million buyout) for 2024.

"I'm on two option years, and we let it get here and it's like, dang, I kind of want to know where my feet are going to be at the next whatever years it is and I want to know where I'm going to be at," Anderson said. "I'm so comfortable where I'm at now. I'm kind of just really anxious to see what it is, and I would rather be comfortable as quick as I can.

"I have a lot of things that are going on with kids and just family. Being comfortable is huge for me. No, I'm not promoting 'pay me.' It's just that's what's really going on. Everybody knows I want to be here. It's no secret."

Orioles Take Down Iconic Baltimore Sun Sign

Feb 27, 2023 8:22 AM

Camden Yards will look vastly different this season.

The famous Baltimore Sun sign that sits atop the scoreboard and below the clock has been taken down, according to a report.

The sign, which reads "The Sun," has been above the scoreboard since the team's first season at Camden Yards in 1992.

The Orioles are still "having conversations" about what will replace the sign.

The Baltimore Sun hadn't paid for the sign to be up there for "more than a few years."

Bob Nutting: New CBA Didn't Benefit Pirates Enough

Feb 27, 2023 8:13 AM

Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting is making it clear that he's not a fan of Major League Baseball's economic structure or the current collective bargaining agreement.

"There's no question the CBA contained several things that were not good for the Pirates and very few things that were excellent for us," said Nutting, who reportedly has a net worth of more than $1 billion.

He noted that he voted for the CBA -- rather than casting a "protest" vote against ratification -- because losing the 2022 season would have been bad for both the league and the city.

The CBA, agreed upon last March, is slated to run through the 2026 season.
