Reds Are 'Definitely' Still Looking For Bat

Sep 19, 2014 8:12 PM

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty says that the team is "definitely" still looking to add a bat. Cincinnati was one of the teams involved in talks for Mark DeRosa, but St. Louis landed him from Cleveland last week. While the Reds are looking to add a bat, they are somewhat limited by their payroll. "We'll look at each deal individually," Jocketty said. "The DeRosa deal was one we thought made sense to pursue. We can't take on a lot of payroll ? I wouldn?t recommend that we do that ? but if the right deal comes along, we'll look at it."

Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb could be facing career threatening surgery to repair a torn labrum. Few pitchers fully recover from such a procedure, but advancements helped guys like Curt Schilling and Chris Carpenter make comebacks. "You can be the same guy you were before you got hurt," said Diamondbacks reliever Jon Rauch.

Report: Beltran Gets Encouraging Opinion

Oct 14, 2014 11:42 PM

Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran reportedly got an encouraging second option on his troublesome right knee. The New York Daily News initially reported the story on Tuesday. Beltran went to Colorado to visit specialist Dr. Richard Steadman on Monday, and the doctor reportedly confirmed that the outfielder has a bone bruise in the knee. Assuming Beltran does have just a bruise, and doesn't need major surgery, he could return to the Mets after the All-Star break.

Nationals, Pirates Swap Milledge, Morgan

Oct 24, 2014 11:46 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have acquired outfielder Lastings Milledge and right-handed pitcher Joel Hanrahan in exchange for outfielder Nyjer Morgan and left-handed pitcher Sean Burnett. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington. Milledge, 24, began the season with Washington and spent a majority of the 2009 campaign with Triple-A Syracuse. He was on a rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Nationals at the time of the trade due to a broken finger on his right hand suffered on May 11 while playing with Syracuse. "In both Hanrahan and Milledge we have acquired players with the upside to be solid to above average major league players," said Huntington. "Hanrahan had a strong season in his first year as a relief pitcher in 2008 and has the arsenal to pitch in late game situations in a quality Major League bullpen. Milledge was one of the premier prospects in baseball. He is still young enough and has the tools to develop into an above average Major League player. We have the confidence in our staff to help each of these players reach their high ceilings."

AL All-Star Races Remain Tight

Jun 17, 2014 12:17 AM

Vying for his second straight appearance, Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler continues to rank among the A.L. leaders with 2,170,100 votes, but his advantage over last year's starter, Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox, has dwindled from 200,238 votes two weeks ago to 58,390 last week and now to 6,830 in the closing days. Pedroia, the 2008 A.L. Most Valuable Player, has collected 2,163,270 votes. Meanwhile, Pedroia's teammate, first baseman Kevin Youkilis, has reclaimed the top spot over Mark Teixeira of the Yankees in a classic race at first base, where the leader has changed in each of the last four weeks. The 1,915,303 votes for Youkilis, the 2008 A.L. starter, have once again pushed him ahead of Teixeira, a 2005 A.L. All-Star who has drawn 1,875,256 votes. The American League's two top vote-getters are on the left side of the infield, where Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has garnered 3,046,813 votes in his bid for his 10th All-Star appearance and Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, in his first year on the ballot, has notched 2,988,363 votes as he attempts to become an All-Star for the second time in his two Major League seasons. Behind the dish, two-time A.L. All-Star Joe Mauer of the Twins has jumped into contention for the overall number one spot with 2,851,819 votes. In the outfield, Jason Bay of the Red Sox is in front with 2,609,913 votes as he aims for his first A.L. All-Star berth and his third Midsummer Classic invitation overall. Bay is joined by Mariners eight-time A.L. All-Star Ichiro Suzuki, who has drawn 1,802,826 votes. Rangers center fielder Josh Hamilton, the 2008 A.L. All-Star who is currently on the disabled list, is hanging on to third place with 1,635,781 votes, but a pair of two-time A.L. All-Stars, Torii Hunter of the Angels of Anaheim is fourth with 1,490,800 and Carl Crawford (.319, 7 HR, 37 RBI, 40 SB) of the Rays ranks fifth with 1,442,175.

Beltran's Career Could Hinge On Diagnosis?

Oct 16, 2014 10:55 AM

Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran has had a second opinion on his bum right knee. He recently met with orthopedic surgeon Richard Steadman, who is famous for inventing microfracture knee surgery. If Beltran undergoes such a procedure, he would likely miss the rest of the season and his career could be placed in jeopardy. Beltran, 32, had arthroscopic surgery on both knees after the 2007 season.

Gossage: Rivera Is Best Closer Ever

Oct 31, 2014 7:24 PM

Goose Gossage doesn't think there is even a question that Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer baseball has ever seen. "I'm very proud of Mariano; he's a great relief pitcher and the greatest modern closer of all-time," Gossage said. "But to compare him to guys like me, Rollie Fingers, Dan Quisenberry and Sparky Lyle, it's apples and oranges. These guys are so dominant in that one-inning role, people forget about what we used to do."
