Sheets Could Be Done For Season

Feb 11, 2014 5:44 AM

Athletics right-hander Ben Sheets could miss the remainder of the season after he was placed on the disabled list Saturday. Sheets said his elbow has swelled far more than usual his past few starts. "It's possible," he said of missing the rest of the season. "I don't know. I don't like the fact it's so swollen. It's been so up and down the last two weeks, so up and down all year." Sheets will visit his own orthopedist in Dallas on Tuesday. He already has been checked by Oakland's doctors, and general manager Billy Beane said the team will wait to disclose a diagnosis until Sheets gets a second opinion. "We wouldn't want to speculate," Beane said. "We'll have a more definitive diagnosis after that."

He is expected to be ready for spring training prior to the 2011 season. "It got to a point where it was very painful for him," manager Bob Geren said. "It was recommended that to go on in the future and to feel 100 percent healthy, this was the right way to go."

Angels Warned Of Possible Oakland Riots

Aug 29, 2014 8:23 PM

Major League Baseball warned the Angels last week about the possibility of riots in Oakland this weekend if a verdict comes down in the case of a transit officer who is on trial for shooting an unarmed man on a train platform. The case, which involves a white officer and a black victim, has sparked racial tensions in the East Bay, so the trial was moved to Los Angeles. The Angels, who are scheduled to arrive in the Bay Area late Thursday night for a weekend series in Oakland, are staying in a San Francisco hotel and will bus to Oakland Coliseum. "I don't anticipate anything. We're going to play baseball," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Obviously, it's a high-visibility trial and I'm sure there are going to be emotional reactions, but we're going to play baseball. I don't anticipate any issues."

A's Selling 'Get Off My Mound' Shirts

Sep 16, 2014 10:08 PM

The Yankees will battle the Athletics in Oakland starting Monday night and the A's are capitalizing on New York's last trip to the West Coast. A feud between Alex Rodriguez and Dallas Braden was born on April 22 when the third baseman ran across the mound when Braden was pitching. The A's are selling shirts that say, "Get off my mound." "It looks like the A's are making light of the situation," Braden was quoted saying in Monday's San Francisco Chronicle. "In some ways, it might keep what happened alive."
