David Ortiz Claims A-Rod, Derek Jeter Upset With Treatment By Yankees

Oct 31, 2017 6:41 PM

David Ortiz claims both Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have issues with the way they've been treated by the New York Yankees.

“Things didn’t end up the way things should be,” Ortiz told Sports Illustrated of the end of Rodriguez's tenure.

“To be honest with you, there’s a problem between that organization and its players, I believe. I don’t even think Jeter is happy with them, you know what I’m saying?”

Jeter retired in 2014 and recently became a part owner of the Miami Marlins.

“Now you would be like, ‘Hold on, Derek Jeter is not happy with the Yankees? What’s going on?’” Ortiz said. “Somebody needs to figure out what’s going on. I’ve been thinking: ‘Wait a minute, how come the legends are not happy once they get out of town?’ I don’t know. But I’m happy with the Red Sox. I’ll tell you that.”

Mark Teixeira: Yankees Need 'Better Communicator' Than Girardi

Oct 30, 2017 7:49 AM

Mark Teixeira, who played under Joe Girardi for eight seasons, believes the New York Yankees need a manager that is a "better communicator" than the recently let-go skipper.

"We all know why Joe Girardi is not coming back," Teixeira told The New York Post. "We all know it's because of the communication and the intensity was a little bit too much. [General manager Brian Cashman] did an amazing job rebuilding this roster. He just wanted a different voice."

Teixeira and Girardi won a World Series together in 2009.

"Everyone loves Joe, everyone respects Joe, he is a good manager, he is a good man," the former first baseman said. "But with baseball the way it is played today and the need for a manager to be a better communicator and communicate with the front office the reasoning for doing things and to be a little bit more relaxed — especially in a place like New York, where the pressure is everywhere. He just wasn't the best man for the job anymore."

Mariano Rivera Surprised Yankees Fired Joe Girardi

Oct 30, 2017 7:50 AM

Mariano Rivera was surprised by the Yankees' decision to fire Joe Girardi after a decade as manager.

"Joe did a great job managing the team for so many years, and especially this year but, well, it's business," Rivera said Saturday at the World Series before presenting an award to Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen.

Joe Girardi, Yankees Agree To Part Ways

Oct 28, 2017 2:29 AM

Joe Girardi will not return to the New York Yankees in 2018.

Girardi just concluded a four-year, $16 million contract, and both he and the team agreed to part ways.

The Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs in Game 7 of the ALC.

Girardi won the World Series once and made the playoffs six times during his 10-year tenure.

The Yankees don't have an obvious candidate to replace Girardi. Rob Thompson and Tony Pena are two internal candidates, but they're expected to look externally as well.

CC Sabathia Wants To Re-Sign With Yankees

Oct 23, 2017 8:00 AM

CC Sabathia hopes to re-sign with the New York Yankees this winter.

Sabathia started Game 7 of the ALCS and allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings in a start that wasn't bad, but wasn't what the Yankees were hoping for either.

"This is my home. I want to see this thing through," the left-hander said. "I want to come back here and finish things off. This is where I want to be."

Sabathia, 37, has a degenerative knee condition and can no longer pitch deep into games with regularity. However, he's been a constant for New York over nine years and is valuable in the clubhouse.

"He's as good as I've ever been around when it comes to a clubhouse guy, a guy that will take the ball when you're on a losing streak or that you can count on," Joe Girardi said following Game 7. "Our players can learn a lot from CC. The kind of fighter that he is. The things that he has to overcome to be successful."

Joe Girardi Uncertain If He'll Return To Yankees In 2018

Oct 22, 2017 9:34 AM

Joe Girardi is uncertain if he'll return to the New York Yankees as manager in 2018.

Girardi's four-year, $16 million contract is up at the end of this season.

Both Girardi and the Yankees have been quiet on whether they want to continue the relationship.

"I thought everybody did everything they possibly could to get where we wanted to go -- to be the last team standing," Brian Cashman said. "It is what it is."

Cashman's contract is also up this offseason but he's expected to sign a new deal.

Girardi, 53, has managed the Yankees for a decade since he replaced his Hall of Fame predecessor, Joe Torre, in 2008.

Astros To Start Lance McCullers Jr. In Game 4

Oct 17, 2017 8:55 AM

The Houston Astros will start Lance McCullers Jr. in Game 4.

McCullers had a 2.69 ERA in his first 15 starts of the season but a back problem and arm fatigue limited him to just six starts in the second half and an 8.23 ERA.

"I think that's the unknown," said Astros manager A.J. Hinch when asked which version of McCullers will take the mound. "He's a really good pitcher. He's got really electrifying stuff, some of the best stuff in the big leagues."

Houston decided not to bring back Dallas Keuchel on three days' rest for Game 4, which would have also allowed him to pitch in Game 7.

McCullers is known for his curveball.

Yankees Could Trade Dellin Betances, Adam Warren

Oct 16, 2017 10:44 AM

TThe New York Yankees will attempt to drop their payroll below the $197 million luxury tax threshold next season. Hal Steinbrenner has demanded it and Brian Cashman publicly vowed to make it happen.

The Yankees could trade Dellin Betances and Adam Warren to clear salary.

Betances and Warren combined for 117 innings and a 2.62 ERA, but the emergence of Chad Green and the acquisitions of Tommy Kahnle and David Robertson make them more expendable.

MLB Trade Rumors projected Betances’ 2018 salary at $4.4 million and Warren’s at $3.1 million.
