Dodgers, Yankees Among Five Teams To Pay Luxury Tax

Dec 20, 2017 7:13 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers will pay $36.2 million in luxury tax, marking the fourth consecutive year they've paid the highest penalty.

The New York Yankees owe a penalty for the fifteenth straight year, but their $15.7 million figure is the club's lowest since 2011.

The San Francisco Giants ($4.1 million), Detroit Tigers ($3.7 million) and Washington Nationals ($1.45 million) rounded out the tax payers. The Nationals will pay tax for the first time.

Both the Dodgers and Yankees have vowed to get under next year's $197 million luxury tax threshold. That would reset their base tax rate from 50 percent to 20 percent going into the 2018-19 offseason.

Yankees, Pirates Discussing Gerrit Cole Trade

Dec 16, 2017 12:41 PM

The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates are discussing a trade that would send Gerrit Cole to the American League for a package centered around Clint Frazier, according to a report.

Pittsburgh would also like a young starting pitcher on the verge of the Major Leagues. New York's Chance Adams may best fit that description.

Cole, 27, won't be a free agent until 2020.

Yankees Asked Aaron Judge For Input Before Giancarlo Stanton Trade

Dec 12, 2017 3:49 PM

The New York Yankees reached out to Aaron Judge for his input on trading for Giancarlo Stanton before fully agreeing upon the deal.

Judge emerged as a leader of the Yankees last season despite being just 25.

Brian Cashman told Judge, “Hey, my job as general manager is to constantly look at every opportunity that may present itself, and this is one that is staring me in the face here that I have some interest in. I want to get your feedback on it, and just how it could fit between DH, right field and left field and the cast of characters we have.”

Judge was said to be "pumped" to have Stanton join him in the Yankees' lineup.

Marlins Gave Giancarlo Stanton Ultimatum To Pick Giants Or Cardinals

Dec 12, 2017 2:44 PM

The Miami Marlins negotiated Giancarlo Stanton trades with the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals and then told Stanton that he had to pick one of the two destinations.

The Marlins gave Stanton an ultimatum that he'd be stuck with the Marlins until his 2020 opt-out if he didn't pick one of the clubs.

Stanton respects both the Giants and Cardinals, but preferred going to a more established contender.

While Stanton took meetings with the Giants and Cardinals, he was never close to approving a trade to either team.

The Marlins began to aggressively pursue a trade with the Yankees when they were unable to change Stanton's mind on the Giants or Cardinals.

Yankees Trade Chase Headley To Padres In Salary Dump

Dec 12, 2017 12:41 PM

The New York Yankees have traded Chase Headley to the San Diego Padres in a salary dump.

Headley is owed $13 million for the 2018 season.

The move will allow the Yankees to aggressively pursue re-signing CC Sabathia, trading or signing another start and/or re-signing Todd Frazier.

The Yankees want to get their payroll under $197 million to lower their luxury tax threshold from 50 percent.

Headley, 33, batted .273 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs in 147 games last season.

Brian Cashman Signs New Five-Year, $25M Deal With Yankees

Dec 12, 2017 10:19 AM

Brian Cashman has agreed upon a new contract with the New York Yankees believed to be worth as much as $25 million over five years.

Cashman was working without a contract this winter but assumed to remain as general manager.

"I want him to stay, and he's going to stay," Hal Steinbrenner said without answering about the specific numbers.

Cashman said he didn't even think about leaving.

"At the end of the day, like I wasn't intending to go anywhere, never had an interest in going anywhere," Cashman said. "So I had told Hal straight up, 'Like, listen, let's just try to work through this and get it behind us, because I have no intent of jumping ship.'"

Yankees Acquire Giancarlo Stanton From Marlins

Dec 11, 2017 1:59 AM

The New York Yankees have agreed to acquire Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins.

Stanton previously rejected proposed trades to the Giants and Cardinals using his full no-trade clause. The Dodgers were believed to be his preferred destination.

Staton and Aaron Judge combined to hit 111 homers last season. Both players are right fielders, however, and one will need to learn a new position defensively when not playing designated hitter.

The Marlins are expected to acquire Starlin Castro and prospects as part of the deal.

Stanton signed a 13-year, $325 million deal three years ago.
