Red Sox Trade Delcarmen To Rockies
The Red Sox have traded reliever Manny Delcarmen and cash to the Rockies for Single-A right-hander Chris Balcom-Miller.
Delcarmen was 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA, 32 strikeouts and 28 walks in 48 relief outings for Boston this season.
Colorado had been looking to bolster their bullpen as they try to remain in the NL playoff picture.
Delcarmen has been with Boston since he was drafted in 2000.
Boston Claim Napoli, Deal Unlikely
The Red Sox claimed Angels catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli off waivers late last week, according to a source.
However, the Boston Herald writes that a trade is unlikely.
The move was meant at least partly as a defensive one to keep Napoli to going to a team like the rival Rays.
According to the source, the Angels likely will pull Napoli back.
Red Sox, Victor Martinez Still Far Apart
The Red Sox have had preliminary talks with Victor Martinez on a contract extension, but nothing serious has been discussed.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that, "He will have a market. The Tigers may be an excellent fit, because they need a catcher and a hitter for the middle of their order."
Red Sox Weren't Trying To Block Yankees, Rays From Getting Damon
The Red Sox legitimately wanted outfielder Johnny Damon when they claimed him on waivers from the Tigers earlier this week.
Damon eventually blocked a trade to Boston, where he spent several seasons.
There were reports that the Red Sox claimed Damon in order to keep American League East rivals New York and Tampa Bay from getting him, but that wasn't the case.
Pedroia Could Have Foot Surgery
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is still waiting on the results of a second opinion, but there is a chance he could require season-ending surgery on his fractured left foot, according to a team source.
Pedroia originally suffered the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot on June 25 in San Francisco and missed a total of 44 games before being activated on Aug. 17.
He played just two games before landing back on the disabled list.
Damon Denies Return To Boston
Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon has nixed a potential return to the Red Sox.
Boston claimed Damon on waivers this week, but he had the right to veto the deal because his contract has a no-trade clause.
"I love Detroit," he told reporters before Tuesday's game.
Damon Leaning Towards Detroit
Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon is leaning against a return to the Red Sox.
Detroit placed Damon on waivers late last week and Boston, one of his former teams, claimed him.
"My gut and everything else tells me Detroit's the place for me," he told reporters on Monday night.
Damon said over the weekend that he hoped to re-sign with the Tigers this winter, even if he was eventually traded.

The Red Sox were the team that claimed Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon on waivers.
Detroit needs approval from Damon before he could return to Boston.
"Not sure buddy," Damon told Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman in a text message.
Westmoreland To Begin Rehab Soon
Red Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland, who underwent brain surgery in March, is set to continue his rehab with the Lowell Spinners and Greenville Drive in the coming weeks.
Westmoreland underwent surgery to repair a cavernous malformation of the brain stem, but has been able to increase his baseball activities to the point where he has been running, throwing and taking some swings.
Lowell Still Expected To Retire
Red Sox infielder Mike Lowell is still expected to retire after the 2010 season.
Lowell first suggested in April that this year might be his last.
"I'm pretty much set in knowing what I'm going to do after this year," Lowell said Sunday. "It will be fun. It will be fun enjoying my kids."
Lowell is hitting .229 with a .685 OPS on the season.
