The Boston Red Sox want to sign J.D. Martinez, but may have to find a way to trade Hanley Ramirez in order to relieve a roster logjam if they do so.
There have been rumblings that the Red Sox want to trade Ramirez, but they haven't been able to find a suitor.
Ramirez will make $22 million next season and his contract includes a 2019 option worth the same amount that vests if he logs at least 497 plate appearances next year.
The Boston Red Sox have re-signed Mitch Moreland to a two-year contract.
Moreland will receive $13 million guaranteed, with $6.5 million split between the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
He can reportedly earn an extra $1 million through incentives.
The Boston Red Sox are among the clubs expected to meet with J.D. Martinez at the winter meetings, according to a source.
"We know who we want," Dave Dombrowski said. "There's at least a pool of players that we want. I mean, I have the list in my pocket."
The Red Sox are looking to add a middle-of-the-order hitter.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are interested in re-signing Martinez and the San Francisco Giants are a rumored suitor as well.
The Boston Red Sox, looking to add to their offense, have inquired with the Chicago Cubs about trading for Kyle Schwarber, according to a report.
The Red Sox would be able to mask Schwarber's defensive shortcomings by playing him at designated hitter.
Boston finished last in the American League with 168 home runs in 2017, the first time that has happened since 1993.
To this point, the Cubs are considered unlikely to deal Schwarber.
Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright was arrested and charged with domestic assault following a dispute with his wife, Sharon, at their Tennessee home.
Wright's family issued a statement to NBC Boston through Wright's lawyer, Alex Little.
"On Friday night, Steven was arrested at our home following a verbal argument, and the police charged him with domestic assault. Although he said things he deeply regrets, he did not raise his hand at anyone during the incident, and the situation was purely emotional. We are working together as a family to make our relationships stronger, and we ask that you respect our privacy as we do so."
