Victor Martinez Breaks Left Thumb
Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez fractured the top of his left thumb against the Giants on Sunday.
He suffered the injury in Boston's 5-1 win and was replaced by Jason Varitek. A foul tip off the bat of Pablo Sandoval hit Martinez's left thumb in the second inning.
Martinez was hit on the thumb again in the third inning by a foul ball by Andres Torres.
"It's not a given that he'll go on the DL but it's not a given that he'll be OK, either," manager Terry Francona said. "We'll get him examined tomorrow and we'll see where we go from there."
A's Trade Patterson To Red Sox
The Athletics have traded utilityman Eric Patterson to the Red Sox for a minor-league left-hander.

Pedroia On Crutches After Game
The Red Sox are very concerned about the injury to Dustin Pedroia.
?He got X-rays,? manager Terry Francona said. ?They did not see a break but the kid?s sore as hell.?
Pedroia, who was on crutches after the game, will have additional tests taken this morning.
?I?m sore,? he said. ?I?ll get checked out (Saturday) and make sure we get to the bottom of everything, but I?m pretty disappointed. I?ve never really hit a ball there before. But I?ll be all right.?
Red Sox Place Lowell On DL
The Red Sox have placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the disabled list in order to rest his surgically repaired hip.
Boston's decision to do so had little to do with Lowell's health, according to his agent.
"The Red Sox have on innumerable occasions made it painfully clear that they will NOT grant Mike his release nor will they designate him for assignment," Seth Levinson said. "There are only two practical options: trade or DL."
Red Sox Showing Interest In Everett
The Red Sox have shown interest in shortstop Adam Everett, according to a source.
Everett was designated for assignment by the Tigers on June 8 and released by the club seven days later.
He would only cost the Major League minimum with the Tigers responsible for what was left on the infielder's one-year, $1.55 million deal he signed prior to the season.

Drew Returning Early For Red Sox
Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday against the Rockies.
Drew strained his right hamstring in the field during Boston's game against Los Angeles on Friday.
An MRI showed that the outfielder would not have to go on the disabled list.
"The good news is, I don't think anyone remotely thinks it's a DL," manager Terry Francona said. "We'll stay away from him tonight, with tomorrow off, and we'll see how he's doing tomorrow. There's a big outfield in Denver and if he's healthy to play, he'll play. If not, we'll make the adjustment like we always do."
Matsuzaka To Come Off DL, Face Rockies
Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka is set to come off the disabled list and start against the Rockies on Thursday.
Matsuzaka was scratched just before his scheduled start against the Phillies last Saturday. He threw 49 pitches in a simulated game.
