Cubs Sue Under Armour

Mar 22, 2014 1:07 PM

The Chicago Cubs baseball franchise, accusing Under Armour Inc. of reneging on a $10.8 million, five-year sponsorship agreement, sued the athletic-wear maker. In a complaint filed Jan. 22 in U.S. District Court in Chicago, the ball club said the garment-maker agreed in principle to the deal and is still using Cubs players and the team's stadium, Wrigley Field, in advertisements. The Baltimore-based maker of perspiration-absorbent shorts and shirts told the Cubs in a Dec. 12 letter it wouldn't sponsor them next season and "would not meet any of its obligations under the agreement," according to the team's complaint, which seeks full payment of the contract price. "Under Armour's abrupt, unilateral action has left the ball club with no choice but to file suit to enforce its rights," the team said in a statement.

Jun 8, 2014 10:11 AM

Although the Cubs aren't part of Tribune Co.'s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, experts say a federal court overseeing the case is likely to review the impending sale anyhow. It's not yet clear whether such a review would be a formality or whether it could derail or delay a sale.

Radomski: I Believe McNamee, Not Clemens

Oct 16, 2014 3:43 PM

Admitted steroids' dealer Kirk Radomski says that he believes Brian McNamee over pitcher icon Roger Clemens. "I don't believe him [Clemens] at all," Radomski said. "I believe my friend." Clemens has steadfastly refuted McNamee's testimony that he used performance-enhancing drugs, and the two have filed defamation suits against the other. "Brian didn't throw him under the bus," Radomski told ESPN.com. "What people don't understand is how far he went to protect Clemens. He almost screwed up his own case and got charged with stuff. This is a guy who told Clemens' agent -- gave him fair warning to get a hold of Mitchell. And they did absolutely nothing."

Cubs' chairman Crane Kenney has reiterated that he expects the team's sale to be completed by opening day. The Tribune Co. put the Cubs on the market on opening day 2007, when it accepted a buyout from real estate mogul Sam Zell. Since then, Tribune has slowly whittled the list of potential buyers from 10 to three.

McNamee: Clemens Will Go To Jail

Sep 26, 2014 12:29 PM

In a video on the Web site Sportsimproper.com, Brian McNamee tells host Mai Tran he believes Roger Clemens will be sent to prison for his repeated denials of steroid use during the Feb. 13, 2008, congressional hearing on the Mitchell Report. "Let me ask you this," Tran asked McNamee. "Do you foresee seeing Roger Clemens in a uniform next year?" "He'll probably be wearing a uniform, but it will be one of those orange jumpsuits with a serial number on it," McNamee replied. "Sounds like a prison uniform to me," Tran said. McNamee told Tran that he was told the evidence that federal investigators have been compiling against Clemens is "overwhelming." A federal grand jury in Washington is reviewing evidence this week about whether Clemens lied to Congress when he denied using steroids and human growth hormone during the hearing. McNamee told congressional investigators and the report's author, former Sen. George Mitchell, that he injected Clemens with illicit drugs dozens of times between 1998 and 2001.

Yankees' President Subpoenaed Over Stadium

Oct 16, 2014 10:19 PM

A New York Assembly committee has subpoenaed the Yankees' president as they investigate the use of millions of dollars in public funding to build the new Yankee Stadium. "I guess it makes for good political theater because it's the Yankees, but when it comes to valuable taxpayer dollars, decisions should be made on return, not rhetoric," city spokesman Andrew Brent said. "The deal leverages a federal program and will result in New York City getting back more tax revenue than it will cost and the South Bronx getting thousands of new jobs and more than $1 billion in private investment."
