Ortiz And Manny Tested Positive In 2003

Aug 1, 2014 8:11 PM

David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez were among the roughly 100 Major League Baseball players to test positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, according to lawyers with knowledge of the results. The Red Sox subsequently won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, the first title ended an 86-year slump. Baseball first tested for steroids in 2003, and the results from that season were supposed to remain anonymous. But for reasons that have never been made clear, the results were never destroyed and the first batch of positives has come to be known among fans and people in baseball as ?the list.? Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Jason Grimsley and David Segui also tested positive in 2003. The information about Ramirez and Ortiz emerged through interviews with multiple lawyers and others connected to the pending litigation. Asked about the 2003 drug test on Thursday in Boston, Ortiz shrugged. ?I?m not talking about that anymore,? he said. ?I have no comment.? In February, Ortiz said that players who tested positive for steroids should be suspended for an entire season.

The Cubs are thinking about filing for Chapter 11 in order to speed the sale of the club, according to a number of media reports. If they file, the Cubs would be the first team to file for bankruptcy since the Pilots did so in 1970. "It's pretty certain that they will do it," a source. The Tribune Co., which itself filed for bankruptcy protection in December and is selling the club, intends for the team's stay in Chapter 11 to last just a day or two.
