Rangers Put Padilla On Waivers

Oct 6, 2014 6:48 AM

Vicente Padilla was placed on outright waivers Wednesday by the Texas Rangers. Padilla remains on the active roster and is scheduled to pitch Sunday. The other 29 major-league clubs have until noon Friday to make a claim, but the Rangers don't anticipate that happening. No team is going to pick up that contract, a source said. Major-league sources indicated the Rangers had two motives behind the transaction, which is supposed to be a confidential procedure: to free up money that could be used later in the season to upgrade the club, and to rid themselves of Padilla's inconsistent behavior on the mound. Those sources indicated that the Rangers weren't happy with his performance Tuesday against the Yankees.

Atlanta Mysteriously Releases Glavine

Jul 28, 2014 11:25 PM

Just a day after Tom Glavine threw six scoreless innings in his latest rehab start, he was released by the Atlanta Braves. Glavine was to be paid $1 million for his first day on the active roster, $1.25 million for 30 days on the roster and another $1.25 million for 90 days on the roster, bringing the total possible value of the deal to $4.5 million. The Braves told Glavine that he was being released because his velocity is down, one source said. However, Glavine was throwing only 76-78 miles per hour in spring training and in recent starts had increased that to 83-86 miles per hour. "I don't know what else I can do," Glavine said after Tuesday night's game, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Physically I felt good and I feel like I'm ready. "I'd love to get to Atlanta and help the team. I'll go (to Turner Field) tomorrow and prepare to pitch on Sunday, wherever that is."
