Braves Top 300 Home Runs, Eye MLB Record

Sep 27, 2023 8:21 AM

The Atlanta Braves became the first National League club to hit 300 home runs in a season when Kevin Pillar went deep in the sixth inning on Tuesday night.

The Braves are just the third team to accomplish the feat, joining the 2019 Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees.

Atlanta has five more games to break or tie Minnesota's all-time record of 307 home runs.

Braves Reach 100 Wins For Second Straight Season

Sep 25, 2023 8:18 AM

The Atlanta Braves earned their 100th victory of the season Sunday night by defeating the Washington Nationals 8-5.

Atlanta has won 100 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2002-03.

"It's unbelievable," Brian Snitker said. "It's hard to do. I think it's quite an accomplishment anytime you can win 100 games. A lot of things we're doing are really hard. It's taken the whole room in there, that's for sure, to make something like that happen."

Cardinals' Adam Wainwright Wins 200th Game

Sep 19, 2023 7:59 AM

Adam Wainwright notched his 200th career victory as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Monday night.

"For at least a night I was a real pitcher out there, the guy that I want to be," said Wainwright, who plans to retire after the season. "Seven innings, shutout, a couple of hits, got through a couple of tough ABs out there and made adjustments, worked in and out, up and down."

He has won consecutive starts -- both against first-place teams -- after going 0-10 with a 10.72 ERA over his previous 11 games between June 24 and Sept. 7.

Wainwright became the 38th pitcher in National League history to reach 200 wins, and the 24th major leaguer to achieve the milestone since 2000.

He's the third pitcher in Cardinals history to reach 200 wins (Bob Gibson, Jesse Haines).

Astros Fall Two Outs Shy Of Combined No-Hitter

Sep 14, 2023 6:56 AM

The Houston Astros fell two outs shy of a combined no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

Hunter Brown and the Astros held the A's hitless until Ryan Noda's one-out single in the ninth inning of the 6-2 victory, which sent Oakland to its first consecutive 100-loss seasons since the 1960s.

Brown pitched five innings, and Rafael Montero, Hector Neris and Bryan Abreu followed with perfect innings each as Houston retired 11 straight batters.

Seth Brown's single and Shea Langeliers' sacrifice fly drove in runs before Pressly finished the two-hitter by throwing a called third strike past Brent Rooker.

Dusty Baker said they didn't talk about the no-hitter in the dugout, but that everyone was certainly thinking about it.

"I'm sure all the relievers were aware of it, conscious of it because they had been part of two other combined no-hitters," he said. "So they knew, and Pressly was upset because he wanted to be part of it again. But it was spoiled."

Matt Olson Hits 51st HR, Ties Braves Record

Sep 13, 2023 7:13 AM

Matt Olson hit his 51st home run of the season in the Atlanta Braves' 7-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

Olson tied a Braves' record set by Andruw Jones in 2005.

"I thought Matt would be the guy to break the record," Jones said last weekend in Atlanta when his number was retired. "He's just got that swing. I'm pulling for him, and hopefully he can break it."

Olson was raised in the Atlanta area and grew up a fan of Jones and the Braves.

"It's a cool feeling," Olson said. "I watched him growing up and know the kind of player he was. It's cool to be mentioned with him."

Freddie Freeman Nearing Historic Doubles Season

Sep 11, 2023 8:47 AM

Freddie Freeman has already set a career-high (47) and Los Angeles Dodgers' record for doubles (53) in a season, but he has his eyes on something bigger.

Freeman enters Monday's action with 54 doubles, putting him on pace for something really special.

Only six players in Major League history have recorded 60-plus doubles in a season, he's on pace for 61.

No player has reached 60 doubles since Joe Medwick had 64 and Charlie Gehringer had 60 in 1936.

He has 36 steals, putting him in position to possibly become the fourth player with a 25-40 year in his age-22 season or younger, along with Alex Rodriguez in 1998 (42 homers, 46 steals), Cesar Cedeno in 1973 (25 homers, 56 steals) and Mike Trout in 2012 (30 homers, 49 stolen bases).

Twins Rookie Royce Lewis Hits Third Grand Slam In 8 Games

Sep 5, 2023 7:15 AM

Royce Lewis hit a grand slam and had a career-high 6 RBI in the Minnesota Twins' 20-6 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night.

The rookie third baseman tied the franchise record with his third grand slam of the season -- all in the past eight games -- and has four career slams in 56 Major League games.

That's the fewest games to reach four grand slams in MLB history, passing Rudy York (132 games, hit fourth in 1938).

"This team is amazing, and the situation just seems to find me because guys keep getting on base in front of me," Lewis said. "Scoring 20 runs is definitely fun, especially when you can beat your divisional rival in a pivotal series."
