Liam Hendriks Pitches One Inning In 'Emotional' Return

May 30, 2023 8:16 AM

Liam Hendriks allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, his first outing since recovering from non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Hendriks, 34, got several standing ovations, both before he took the mound and when he entered the game in the top of the eighth inning.

"It was definitely emotional," Hendriks said after the Chicago White Sox's 6-4 loss. "It was humbling going out there and seeing the amount of people wearing my shirts, the amount of people having signs or flags or anything like that -- the amount of people that were chanting when I came into the game."

Hendriks threw 27 pitches, giving up runs on a sacrifice fly by Zach Neto and an infield single by Mike Trout. He eventually got Shohei Ohtani to ground out to end the inning, his first since Oct. 3.

He kept his first pitch of the inning as a keepsake.

"The outpouring of love, not only online and on social media, but in person, has been huge and I want to thank the city of Chicago for embracing us in this way," Hendriks said.

The reliever was diagnosed with cancer in December, going public with the news in early January. His goal was to come back without being placed on the 60 day injured list. He accomplished that.

Braves' Mike Soroka Goes Six Innings In First Start Since 2020

May 30, 2023 8:12 AM

Mike Soroka took the mound for the Atlanta Braves on Monday night for the first time since suffering two separate tears to his right Achilles tendon.

Soroka pitched six innings in the Braves' 7-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

"Today was a big one," he said, "a day like today and the people that believed in me. I always said I was going to be back here for the people that believed in me, not the ones that said I couldn't."

Soroka was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to start on Memorial Day -- a whopping 1,030 days between outings for the Braves' 2020 Opening Day starter. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out three and walked two.

"When I think about how long ago it really was, to be honest with you, we can even go back to 2019 because there was nobody in the stands in 2020 so it didn't really feel like big league baseball that year," Soroka said.

Mariners' Bryce Miller Breaks Record Held Since 1901

May 15, 2023 8:59 AM

Bryce Miller continues to impress for the Seattle Mariners.

The rookie allowed no runs on three hits in Seattle's win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Per Sarah Langs, Miller's eight total baserunners allowed in his first three career outings is the fewest since at least 1901 -- minimum 15 innings pitched.

In addition, Miller's streak of three consecutive six-plus-inning starts with fewer than three baserunners allowed is tied for the longest such streak since 1901.

Justin Verlander Becomes 21st Pitcher To Beat Every MLB Team

May 11, 2023 7:56 AM

With Wednesday's win over the Cincinnati Reds, Justin Verlander joined an exclusive club.

Verlander became the 21st pitcher in history to beat every Major League club.

He struck out seven over seven innings of one-run ball as the New York Mets won 2-1 at Great American Ball Park.

The right-hander became the first pitcher to beat all 30 teams since Gerrit Cole achieved the feat on July 10, 2021.

"Any time you do something that not many people have done in this game," Verlander said, "it's pretty cool."

Mitch Keller Throws Pirates' First Shutout Since 2018

The Pittsburgh Pirates ended their seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

Mitch Keller struck out eight, walked one and threw 104 pitches in his first career complete game.

"That's what guys that start Opening Day do," Derek Shelton said. "They go out and stop (a losing streak), and he did it with an exclamation mark."

It was the first nine-inning shutout by a Pirates starter since Jameson Taillon one-hit the Cincinnati Reds on April 8, 2018.
