Jeter Passes Yastrzemski On All-Time Hits List

Sep 18, 2014 7:00 AM

Derek Jeter had three hits on Monday night, moving ahead of Carl Yastrzemski for seventh place on baseball's all-time hit list.

"You know, it's quite an accomplishment," Jeter said. "It's tough to enjoy when you lost the game but yeah, I'm pretty sure when this season is over and done with, I'll look back and get a chance to realize how special it was. But yeah, any time you talk about a list of all-time great players its pretty special."

Jeter is 10 hits behind Honus Wagner for sixth (3,430).

Lincecum Records Rare Feat With Save

Oct 31, 2014 9:41 AM

Tim Lincecum recorded a save for the San Francisco Giants, who had exhausted their bullpen on Tuesday night, allowing him to record a rare feat.

Lincecum became the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter and record a save in the same season since Matt Garza did it in 2010.

The right-hander made his first relief appearance during the regular season on April 2, 2008, but was a fixture out of the bullpen during San Francisco's 2012 playoff run.

"I was trying to do my best to control my emotions," he said.

It was the third multihomer game of the season for Ortiz and the 44th of his career.

Kershaw's H/9 Trails Only Ryan, Koufax All-Time

Oct 5, 2014 6:03 PM

Clayton Kershaw is considered the best pitcher of his generation and when it's all said and done he may be among the best of all-time.

The left-hander has allowed just 6.7956 hits per nine innings in his career, which ranks third all-time among pitchers with at least 1,000 innings pitched.

Only Nolan Ryan (6.5553) and Sandy Koufax (6.7916) allowed fewer hits per nine innings.

No other active pitcher ranks among the ten-best pitchers in the category, although recently-retired relievers Trevor Hoffman and Mariano Rivera are on the list.

Kershaw's Scoreless Streak Ends At 41 Innings

Sep 17, 2014 10:14 PM

Clayton Kershaw threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night, but saw his scoreless innings streak end at 41 frames.

Chase Headley snapped Kershaw's streak with a solo home run in the sixth inning that briefly tied the game. The Los Angeles Dodgers went on to win 2-1.

Kershaw won his eighth straight start and came within 18 innings of the major league record set by Dodgers right-hander Orel Hershiser, who threw 59 consecutive shutout innings in 1988.

"I was barely thinking about the streak at all, and I know he wasn't," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "I mean, we weren't close to anything that was worth starting to get excited about. We were more disappointed that the game was tied. So we had to bear down, keep the game where it was and hope we could scratch out another run."
