Angels, Agent Expecting More Power From Trout

Oct 31, 2014 7:02 AM

During contract negotiations Mike Trout's agent, Craig Landis, has repeatedly mentioned that his client will hit for more power as he matures, according to the Los Angeles Angels.

Jerry Dipoto doesn't disagree.

"Why on earth would we think that we've seen the height of his power production at age 20-21?" he said.

Trout hit 30 and 27 home runs in his first two full seasons, respectively, and is on pace for 27 in 2014.

Miguel Cabrera In New Territory Amid Early-Season Slump

Sep 25, 2014 8:48 PM

Miguel Cabrera, winner of the last two American League MVP awards, has had a slow start to the 2014 season.

Cabrera is hitting .206/.275/.333 with one home run, seven RBIs and 15 strikeouts in 69 plate appearances.

A career .320/.398/.565 hitter, the 31-year-old has never hit lower than .292 with a .349 on-base percentage in a full season. He signed a $292 contract extension with the Detroit Tigers this spring that runs through the 2023 season.

While Cabrera has plenty of time to rebound from his slow start, he is in new territory. Take a look at Cabrera's slash line every season through 16 games.

2004: .328/.414/.656

2005: .323/.371/.500

2006: .317/.406/.567

2007: .327/.424/.673

2008: .283/.348/.500

2009: .410/.471/.639

2010: .365/.452/.667

2011: .304/.429/.643

2012: .290/.357/.500

2013: .348/.416/.493

2014: .206/.275/.333

As you'll see, Cabrera has hit under .300 just twice through 16 games in his Hall of Fame career. Each of those seasons he was hitting at least .283 with a .500 slugging percentage.

Looking at more advanced numbers, Cabrera's 21.7% strikeout percentage jumps off the screen. The figure represents the highest mark of his career over a full season -- his SO% was 24.3 in his rookie year (2003, 346 PAs). As you might expect, his walk percentage is lower than we've come to expect. At 8.7%, it marks the second-lowest rate of his career. Over the 2008 season, Cabrera walked in just 8.2% of his plate appearances.

Most alarmingly, Cabrera has suffered from a severe power outage early this season. His slugging percentage (.333) more closely resembles his career batting average than anything else. He is averaging a home run every 63 at-bats, which is nearly triple the lowest rate of his career and five times his career-best 12.6 AB/HR in 2013. Only 4.2% of his fly balls have left the park, a staggeringly low mark.

Cabrera will eventually work his way out of what can officially be called a slump, but his numbers are troubling nonetheless.

Henderson Alvarez Rebounding From Poor Start

Sep 18, 2014 4:02 AM

Henderson Alvarez made headlines when he threw a no-hitter on the final day of the 2013 regular season, but he struggled to begin this season.

In his first three starts, the right-hander allowed 25 hits and seven walks against only 10 strikeouts in 14.2 innings.

Alvarez hadn't made it past the sixth inning in any outing, but dominated the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.

The Mariners had a lineup with a .353 batting average against him.

Alvarez took a perfect game into the sixth inning for the Miami Marlins. He pitched a complete game shutout with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Some of his effectiveness may be have been a regression to the mean. He had a .444 batting average on plays in play before the start, up from last season's .285 mark. His BABIP for the season is now down to a more reasonable .329.

Yankees Turn Third Triple Play Behind Sabathia

Jun 9, 2014 11:18 PM

The New York Yankees turned a triple play against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night, the third time they've done so behind CC Sabathia.

Thursday night's play was a 5-4-3 started by Yangervis Solarte on a one-hopper right over third base by Sean Rodriguez. Solarte had the presence of mind to step on third before throwing to Brian Roberts at second. Roberts' throw skipped in to Scott Sizemore, playing his first game at first base. He made a perfect scoop to pick the throw and complete the play.

The Yankees also turned triple plays on April 22, 2010 and April 12, 2013 with Sabathia on the mound.

Dodgers' Gonzalez Approaching Several Team Records

Jun 1, 2014 8:59 AM

Adrian Gonzalez has hit a home run in each of his last four games, including a three-run blast on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gonzalez has a nine-game hitting streak, including an eight-game streak of extra-base hits, which is one shy of the Los Angeles Dodgers' franchise record.

Ten of Gonzalez's 14 hits this year are for extra bases, and his home run in four consecutive games is one shy of the club mark.

"You come to a park that's a good place to hit and it makes you a little more aggressive," he said. "You feel better as a hitter."

Davis, who is hitting .279/.353/.419 this season, hit 53 home runs last year.

Of the 42 Major League players that hit at least 50 home runs previously, they dropped from an average of 55.7 home runs to 43.6 the following season.
