Kershaw Pitches Dodgers To NL West Title

Sep 25, 2014 7:16 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night to clinch the National League West title.

They rode Clayton Kershaw, who tied a career-high with his 21st win, to victory.

"You can't take lightly what we did," Kershaw said. "You got to celebrate accomplishments and that's what we did. It's really fun to celebrate with these guys."

It is the second-straight division title for the Dodgers.

Kershaw allowed one run and eight hits in eight innings, struck out 11 and walked none in his last start of the regular season, having won his final seven starts. He is trying to become the first player to lead the major leagues in ERA (1.77) in four consecutive seasons.

Jeter Has First Three-RBI Game Since 2012

Sep 23, 2014 7:18 PM

In the final week of his career, Derek Jeter turned back the clock on Monday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

The New York Yankees shortstop had his first three-RBI game since 2012 as the club won for the fifth time in six games.

Jeter extended his hitting streak to six games with a two-run double to left field in the fifth inning and also contributed a run-scoring groundout, and is now 9-for-20 (.450) on the homestand.

"I never said I didn't think I couldn't play anymore," Jeter said. "This is the time for me to call it a career after this season. Sometimes things are difficult, sometimes they come a little bit easier. Not easy, but they come a little easier at times."

Jeter To Play Every Game Down Stretch

Oct 31, 2014 1:32 PM

Derek Jeter has recorded four-straight two-hit games as his career winds down and the shortstop will play in every game for the New York Yankees down the stretch.

"Obviously, some of those days are going to be DH days to keep him going, similar to what [Sunday] is," Joe Girardi said. "He had Monday off, but now he's swinging the bat and I'm going to keep him in there."

Jeter has made the most of his last homestand so far, hitting .471 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

"It's fun. It's a lot better when they're cheering for you," said Jeter. "But the fans have been great to me all season. Now, I feel good, and we're still trying to win games. Until we're out of games, we all need to battle and play as hard as we can."

Bautista Reaches Pair Of Franchise Milestones

Oct 11, 2014 10:14 PM

Jose Bautista notched a pair of career milestones during Saturday afternoon's win over the New York Yankees.

The Toronto Blue Jays slugger hit a home run and drew three walks.

He has 202 career home runs to pull into a tie with George Bell for fourth most in franchise history.

Bautista also now has 100 walks and 100 RBIs for the third time in his career (2010-11). Bautista joins Carlos Delgado (four times) and John Olerud (1993) as the only Blue Jays to have reached that milestone.

"I'll enjoy that more in the offseason, and personal accolades are great," Bautista said. "That puts you in an elite group amongst Major Leaguers. ... That's what the game is all about when it comes down to it, and I'm going to enjoy it in the offseason, but we're still worried about winning games right now."

Betances Surpasses Rivera's Strikeout Mark

Sep 20, 2014 3:26 PM

Dellin Betances has set a franchise mark, surpassing Mariano Rivera, in the first season since the New York Yankees closer retired.

Betances recorded his 132nd strikeout of the season on Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, breaking Rivera's team record of 130 strikeouts as a reliever. While Rivera needed 107⅔ innings reach his mark, Betances has pitched 87⅔.

"Just to be mentioned around his name, you are talking about the best closer, the best reliever in the game," Betances said. "Just to be in the same breath as him, you know I take thrill in that. As far as innings, he did it with one pitch so I think that is more amazing."

Betances, 26, has struck out more than 50 percent of his batters (132 strikeouts in 263 outs).

"He's been awesome for us all year," Derek Jeter said. "It seemed like Mo pitched two innings every time toward the middle to end in '96. Dellin has been doing the same thing. He has pitched a lot of innings. The thing with him is that anytime he gets guys on base he's capable of getting out of trouble because he can strike guys out."

Altuve Passes Biggio With Club-Record 211th Hit

Oct 31, 2014 2:18 PM

Jose Altuve surpassed Craig Biggio on Tuesday night, recording his club-record 211th hit of the season.

Altuve accomplished the feat with a single to center in the seventh inning.

"I have to go out there and play and finish the season strong," Altuve said. "We need to win a couple of more games to put ourselves in a good position, so it was good to get the 211th so people can stop talking about that and let's go out there and play."

Altuve, hitting .343, could become the first member of the Houston Astros to win a batting title.

As the postseason approaches, Jordan Zimmermann is looking like the No. 1 starter for the Washington Nationals.

His current schedule should put him in position to start Washington's first playoff game and his stats give him an edge over Doug Fister and Stephen Strasburg.

In his last 10 starts, Zimmermann is 6-0 with a 2.16 ERA and just eight walks.
