Oct 31, 2014 10:35 AM

Yusmeiro Petit retired his 46th consecutive hitter on Thursday afternoon, breaking Mark Buehrle's Major League record.

The San Francisco Giants right-hander put his name in the history books by striking out Charlie Culberson for the second out of the third inning.

The historic streak began on July 22 in Philadelphia when Petit retired Grady Sizemore to end the fifth inning.

Hamilton Becomes Youngest Red To Steal 50 Bases

Sep 25, 2014 4:25 PM

Billy Hamilton has added another feat to his impressive rookie season.

Hamilton stole his 50th base of the season on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs, making him the youngest member of the Cincinnati Reds to reach the mark.

He is the ninth player in franchise history to steal 50 bases.

"It feels great. That's just what I like to do is steal bases, and I got a chance tonight," Hamilton said. "I knew I had 49, but not knowing what comes behind the 50 steals. So it was pretty good to get."

Soler Homers In First Major League At-Bat

Sep 16, 2014 3:20 PM

Jorge Soler hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.

"I was real, real happy," Soler said through coaching staff assistant Franklin Font. "My first time, my first at-bat -- very exciting. I felt real comfortable."

Soler is the second prospect in the span of a month to hit a home run in his first game. Javier Baez accomplished the feat in early August.

The shot was estimated to have traveled 423 feet.

Soler became the first Cubs player since Starlin Castro on May 7, 2010 to hit a home run in his first at-bat.

"The first at-bat was real tense," Soler said. "But when I hit a home run, I was shocked about it."

Ortiz Joins 30-HR Club For Eighth Time

Sep 16, 2014 3:24 PM

David Ortiz reached the 30-home run mark on Wednesday night, the eighth time he has in his lengthy career.

All of his 30-home run seasons have come with the Boston Red Sox, tying him with Ted Williams for most all-time by a Boston player.

Ortiz becomes the 13th player in Major League history 38 years old or older to hit 30 or more home runs in a season. The last was Frank Thomas, who was 38 when he hit 39 home runs for Oakland in 2006.

Red Sox Adjusting To Cespedes' Aggressive Approach

Nov 22, 2014 9:18 PM

The Boston Red Sox are still making sense of how Yoenis Cespedes fits into their offense.

David Ortiz and Mike Napoli draw a lot of walks, but Cespedes is much more aggressive while hitting in the middle of the two veterans.

"With it will come some quick outs, but at the same time the ability to impact the baseball is a result of the aggressiveness as well," John Farrell said of Cespedes' plate approach. "He hasn’€'t become more aggressive since coming over here. This is the player we were well aware of and pursued heavily. We're fully accepting of the style of player he is."

Since coming over from the Oakland Athletics, Cespedes has a .219/.231/.406 line with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

"He's been accustomed to hitting in the four hole. [We're trying] to transition him in here with as much comfort as possible. That doesn't mean that going forward there won't be an alignment that flips him and Napoli," Farrell said. "I'm not saying that's going to be tomorrow, but we'll take a look at every combination that's available to us."

Would Healthy Griffey Have Become Home Run King?

Sep 24, 2014 8:00 PM

Ken Griffey, Jr. hit 630 home runs in his 22 seasons in the Major Leagues, but Jayson Starks wonders if he had a chance to compile even better stats.

Griffey might have become baseball's all-time home run king had it not been for 12 trips to the disabled list during his career.

ESPN divided Griffey's career into three sections and projected how many more home runs he would have hit if he avoided significant injury. The study suggests that Griffey would have hit another 147 dingers, bringing him to 777 home runs in his career.

That's 15 more home runs than Barry Bonds hit.

Of course, almost no one stays "full healthy" for 22 seasons. That might mean 100-125 more home runs are a more conservative and accurate estimate, which would still put Griffey at 730-755 home runs.

Red Sox Demote Jackie Bradley, Jr.

Sep 17, 2014 2:58 PM

The Boston Red Sox have demoted Jackie Bradley, Jr. to Triple-A Pawtucket.

In a related move, Boston recalled Mookie Betts for his third stint with the club this season. Betts will take over for Bradley in center field.

Bradley has struggled all season, but the Red Sox have resisted demoting him until now. His .216 batting average is the lowest for a starting center fielder in the American League.

An excellent defender, Bradley also had an 0-for-35 drought -- the longest hitless streak in the majors this season -- and his slugging percentage (.290) is the lowest among all major leaguers with enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title.

Cuddyer Becomes Third Player To Hit For Cycle In Both Leagues

Oct 8, 2014 2:47 PM

Michael Cuddyer hit for the cycle on Sunday, becoming the first player to do so in the Major Leagues this season.

Cuddyer also became just the third player in history to accomplish cycles in both leagues. Bob Watson did it with the Astros (1977) and Red Sox (1979), and John Olerud with the Mets (1997) and Mariners (2001).

"That's what hitting is: It's assessing the situation and trying to execute to get that job done," Cuddyer said. "You can't just go up at the Major League level and blindly just swing the bat. You've got to be able to assess what the situation is and do your best to execute that job."

Ortiz Hits 400th Home Run With Red Sox

Sep 18, 2014 7:43 PM

David Ortiz hit a pair of two-run home runs on Saturday, the 400th and 401st of his career with the Boston Red Sox.

Ortiz joined Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski as the only players to hit 400 homers while playing with the organization.

"It's an honor to be mentioned with those legends that were with the Red Sox," he said. "When you come to this organization to play, you're not expecting to be mentioned with those guys."

Ortiz has 459 home runs in his career, which started with the Minnesota Twins.

Stanton Hits Two HRs, Sets Marlins Mark

Sep 16, 2014 11:21 PM

Giancarlo Stanton hit two home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night, setting a franchise mark in the process.

Stanton's 13th multi-homer game established a franchise career record for the Miami Malrins. He also tied Hanley Ramirez for second place on the club's home run list with 148.

He hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the third to give him 31 on the season and five in his last five games.

"Just feeling better and having better at-bats and pitch selection is a little better," Stanton said.
