Carpenter Doesn't Expect To Miss Start
Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter threw a normal bullpen session Wednesday morning and expects to make his next scheduled start on Saturday against the Brewers.
He said he still feels some discomfort in his right arm after being hit by a line drive in the first inning of his start Monday.
"It's a bruise," Carpenter said. "You get hit with a baseball, it's a bruise, you're going to feel it. But everything felt fine."
Manny Day-To-Day With Hamstring Strain
Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez is day-to-day after injuring his right hamstring on Monday night.
He slid back into second base awkwardly on an unusual play in the first inning against the Giants and left the game.
Ramirez was initially listed as day to day, but the team won't know whether the injury is severe enough for Ramirez to be placed on the disabled list until he comes to the ballpark on Wednesday morning.
He will not play on Wednesday afternoon.
Mets Will Evaluate Beltran Next Week
The Mets will evaluate the health of outfielder Carlos Beltran next week.
Beltran has been playing games in Port St. Lucie.
"Somewhere, in about a week's time, we are going to evaluate him again," general manager Omar Minaya said.
Until he's evaluated, Beltran won't advance past the Single-A level.
Beltran is recovering from January knee surgery, and has yet to play a game for the Mets this year.
Tigers Lose Zumaya For Season
Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is done for the remainder of the season with a fractured right elbow.
He fractured his olecranon, which is the bony tip of the elbow right under the skin, on Monday night.
Phillies Place Utley, Polanco On DL
The Phillies have placed second baseman Chase Utley and third baseman Placido Polanco on the disabled list.
Utley has a sprained thumb and Polanco has been bothered by an elbow injury.
Philadelphia called up infielder Brian Bocock and utility player Greg Dobbs from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Zumaya Hurts Arm as Tigers Win
Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya suffered an arm injury during the team's victory over the Twins on Monday night.
Detroit catcher Gerald Laird said he heard "a little pop" in Zumaya's arm when he threw a pitch to Delmon Young.
Zumaya injured his throwing elbow, but the team revealed little else about the injury.
Heyward Has Bone Bruise, Placed On DL
Braves rookie outfielder Jason Heyward has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a deep bone bruise in his left thumb.
The injury was revealed in an MRI exam on Monday.
"We're doing the best thing, I believe," Heyward said Monday. "Right now is a good opportunity to get it done, get the rest done, get the strength back so I'll be able to come back the second half."
Heyward has tried to play through the injury for about six weeks.
Pedroia Won't Need Surgery On Foot
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia won't need surgery to insert a pin in the fractured bone in his left foot.
Pedroia is expected to miss six weeks.
Beltran Unlikely To Join Mets Before Trip To Puerto Rico
Mets manager Jerry Manuel said Sunday that outfielder Carlos Beltran isn't expected to rejoin the team before their trip to Puerto Rico to face the Marlins.
New York and Florida will begin the special three-game series on Monday.
"No, I don't think so," Manuel said. "I think that he needs those [rehab] games. I wish it woulda been five or six days later, in Puerto Rico -- go home, get a chance to play in front of his family and friends. I would say that would have been a possibility."
Last week, Manuel had hinted that Beltran might join the team in Puerto Rico.
Victor Martinez Breaks Left Thumb
Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez fractured the top of his left thumb against the Giants on Sunday.
He suffered the injury in Boston's 5-1 win and was replaced by Jason Varitek. A foul tip off the bat of Pablo Sandoval hit Martinez's left thumb in the second inning.
Martinez was hit on the thumb again in the third inning by a foul ball by Andres Torres.
"It's not a given that he'll go on the DL but it's not a given that he'll be OK, either," manager Terry Francona said. "We'll get him examined tomorrow and we'll see where we go from there."
