Matusz Appeals 8-Game Suspension For Sticky Substance

Brian Matusz, who was ejected Saturday for using a sticky substance that was on his right arm, was suspended eight games by Major League Baseball on Monday.

The Baltimore Orioles left-hander appealed the decision and was available to pitch in Monday's game against the Houston Astros in Baltimore.

Matusz was the second pitcher in less than a week to be suspended for having a foreign substance on his arm.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Will Smith also appealed, which has yet to be heard, after getting an eight-game ban Thursday.

Brewers relief pitcher Will Smith was suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball for having a foreign substance on his arm during Thursday's game against Atlanta.

Smith was ejected for having rosin and sunscreen on his right forearm in the seventh inning of a loss to the Braves.

Joey Votto Suspended One Game

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with Umpire Chris Conroy following the top of the third inning of the team's Wednesday, May 6th game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. 

Votto's suspension will be served Friday night, when the Reds open up a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

MLB Reduces Kelvin Herrera's Suspensions By One Game

The suspensions for Kansas City Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera have been cut by Major League Baseball from seven games to six.

Herrera began serving the penalty Thursday.

He appealed after being suspended for two separate incidents.

Herrera's five-game ban for throwing behind the back of Brett Lawrie of the Oakland Athletics last month was upheld. His penalty for a brawl with the Chicago White Sox on April 23 was reduced from two games to one.
