MLB Looking Into Whether Stanozolol Cases Are Linked

Apr 14, 2015 7:09 AM

Major League Baseball is investigating four recent positive tests for the steroid stanozolol along "the same model" as its 2013 Biogenesis probe, according to Rob Manfred.

Jenrry Mejia was suspended for 80 games Saturday, the fourth player in 16 days banned under the Major League drug program following a positive test for stanozolol.

Mejia's discipline came after positive tests and suspensions for Ervin Santana, David Rollins and Arodys Vizcaino.

"Other than the similarity of substance, I have no reason to believe right now that they're connected," Manfred said. "Having said this, whenever we have a series of tests for a single substance, we undertake an investigative effort to determine whether there's a connection and what that connection might be. If you look back, the very beginning of Biogenesis was the fact that we had a series of testosterone positives that began our investigative process, so we'll follow that same model."

MLB Suspends Jenrry Mejia 80-Games

Apr 13, 2015 7:43 AM

Mets closer Jenrry Mejia has "disappointed" his teammates and coaches with the announcement of his 80-game suspension for the use of the steroid Stanozolol on Saturday.

"We're very disappointed. I mean, extremely disappointed," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We came into this whole thing in spring training with huge expectations and the back end of our bullpen being very, very strong. So we're all shocked and disappointed, but we stand by the rules and what Major League Baseball has put down. We'll have to regroup and get through the next 80 games with somebody else."

Mejia was suspended after testing positive for Stanozolol, MLB announced.

Angels Disagree With MLB's Decision Not To Discipline Josh Hamilton

Apr 4, 2015 1:57 PM

Josh Hamilton won't be disciplined by the MLB for his latest problems involving cocaine and alcohol.

Team officials responded by saying they were surprised and disappointed.

Jerry Dipoto, general manager of the Los Angeles Angels, said he disagrees with the ruling by an arbitrator appointed under MLB's joint drug program with the players' association. MLB said earlier Friday that it disagreed with the ruling.

Hamilton has played poorly during the first two years of his five-year, $125 million contract with the Angels, who still owe him $83 million in salary over the next three years.

The Angels' public stance supporting punishment of Hamilton is the most visible evidence yet of the club's disenchantment with him.

"Do I agree with the decision that was made by the treatment board? Absolutely not,'' Dipoto said. "But that's not my decision to make."

Ervin Santana Suspended 80 Games For PED Violation

Apr 4, 2015 1:51 PM

Ervin Santana has been suspended 80 games without pay for testing positive for stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension is effective for the first 80 games of the regular season.

Santana said he did not know how the PED got into his system.

"I preach hard work, and don't believe in short cuts," Santana said. "I am very disappointed that I tested positive for a performance enhancing drug. I am frustrated that I can't pinpoint how the substance in question entered my body. I would never knowingly take anything illegal to enhance my performance."

Mike Pelfrey will be the No. 5 starter to take Santana's spot in the rotation.

"It's disappointing. It's difficult," Twins GM Terry Ryan said. "We had a fairly decent spring. Now we've got to regroup here and hopefully it won't affect us as we move forward."
