Trade Deadline Rundown
In a busy final few hours before the trading deadline Monday, there were a plethora of small deals that will help out both the buyers and sellers of this market. Here is a quick rundown of all the player movement today:
The Cardinals added minimal help to their team with the addition of second baseman Ronnie Belliard from the Cleveland Indians for infielder Hector Luna. The move was the only move made by the Redbirds at the deadline.
The Cincinnati Reds went about adding more pitching depth for their stretch run with the additions of Rheal Cormier from the Philadelphia Phillies and Kyle Lohse from the Minnesota Twins. Both teams received a prospect each for their trouble in this deal.
In Detroit, the Tigers added some meat to their order with the trade for Sean Casey from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a minor league pitcher. Casey will man the first base responsibilities now for the Tigers, as Chris Shelton was also designated for assignment in concert with this move.
The Mets were busy today in efforts to help their bullpen with the additons of Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez from the Pirates for outfielder Xavier Nady. They then turned Perez around, along with reliever Heath Bell to the San Diego Padres for set-up man Scott Linebrink.
In Texas, the Rangers proved to be buyers again with the addition of outfielder Matt Stairs from the Kansas City Royals for a minor league pitcher. New Royals? general manager Dayton Moore continued to rebuild the franchise later in the day with a deal with the Colorado Rockies that brought him first basemen Ryan Shealy and pitcher Scott Dohmann in exchange for pitchers Jeremy Affeldt and Denny Bautista.
The Rangers also added to their pitching staff with Kip Wells from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a minor league pitcher.
The Dodgers were also very busy today with two big trades that netted them infielder Juilo Lugo from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Greg Maddux from the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers sent infielder Cesar Izturis to the Cubs and sent two outfield prospects to the Devil Rays, including top prospect Joel Guzman.
The Cubs weren?t done dealing as they sent infielder Todd Walker to the San Diego Padres in exchange for a minor league pitcher.
Finally, after stealing all of the spotlight from this deadline with the addition of Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle, the Yankees continued to add with 1B/OF Craig Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for pitcher Shawn Chacon.
Royals Deal Affeldt And Bautista To Colorado
The Kansas City Royals have acquired first baseman/DH Ryan Shealy and right-handed reliever Scott Dohmann from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jeremy Affeldt and right-handed pitcher Denny Bautista, Royals Senior Vice President-Baseball Operations/General Manager Dayton Moore announced Monday. Both Shealy and Dohmann will report to Kansas City.
Nationals Keep Soriano
The Washington Nationals, after sorting through dozens of offers, have decided not to trade slugger Alfonso Soriano, according to Scott Miller of Sportsline.
They will reportedly look to lock him up longterm, as he will be a free agent this winter.
Dodgers Acquire Lugo From Devil Rays
The Dodgers have acquired Julio Lugo from the Devil Rays for two minor leaguers, Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedroza, according to ESPN.
Mets Deal Perez For Bell And Linebrink
The Mets will trade LHP Oliver Perez along with RHP Heath Bell for Padres RHP Scott Linebrink.
Cubs And Dodgers Reach Agreement On Maddux Trade
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs have reached a tentative deal to trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers.
The deal requires the commissioner's approval because it involves a cash transaction of more than $1 million going from the Cubs to the Dodgers.
ESPN is reporting that Cesar Izturis could be on his way to Chicago in the deal.
Dodgers Make Progress On Maddux Trade
Buster Olney is reporting that Dodgers are making progress on acquiring Greg Maddux from the Cubs.
The Padres are also in the running.
Red Sox Continue To Pursue Andruw Jones
According to a source that spoke with Baseball Prospectus, the Red Sox continue to look at Andruw Jones.
Whether or not they decide to give up Jon Lester is the holdup.
Chacon Traded To Pittsburgh For Craig Wilson
According to ESPN, Shawn Chacon has been dealt to the Pirates for Craig Wilson.
Mets Were Ready To Get Oswalt From Baltimore For Milledge
The Orioles, according to Steve Phillips, were planning on spinning Roy Oswalt to the Mets for Lastings Milledge.
