Following Souza Trade, Nationals Will Count On Taylor

Dec 23, 2014 7:34 AM

The Washington Nationals traded Steven Souza to the Tampa Bay Rays earlier this month, making Michael A. Taylor a very important part of the organization.

Souza was Washington's most Major League-ready outfielder, a role now filled by Taylor.

Mike Rizzo said he felt he could absorb the loss of Souza because of the depth of outfield talent behind him in the Washington system. He added that he feels Taylor is only "a half a year" behind Souza in terms of development.

Harper, Nationals Avoid Grievance Hearing

Dec 18, 2014 3:40 AM

The Washington Nationals have avoided a grievance hearing with Bryce Harper over the outfielder's salary for next season.

The two sides reached a settlement on Sunday night, according to a source.

Harper and the Nationals had been at odds over how his salary would be determined because of a rare dispute over the contract he signed as a first-round draft pick in 2010. Without a settlement, a contentious hearing would have been held on Tuesday.

Scott Boras believed Harper had the right to opt out of his prescribed 2015 salary ($1.5 million) and into baseball's arbitration system.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports was the first to report that the two sides agreed to two-year deal that avoided the grievance.

Bryce Harper Skips Fan Festival

Dec 14, 2014 10:48 PM

In a statement emailed by one of his agent's employees, Harper said: "I have attended NatsFest each year and always enjoy my experience with the fans, but was unable to attend this year's event due to matters out of my control. I look forward to next year's NatsFest."

The MLBPA has filed a grievance on Harper's behalf over whether he should be able to void the 2015 terms in the final season of a $9.9M, five-year contract he signed when drafted.
