Hanrahan Traded To Red Sox In Six-Player Deal

The Red Sox on Wednesday acquired closer Joel Hanrahan and a prospect from the Pirates in exchange for reliever Mark Melancon and a trio of minor leaguers.

Also headed to Pittsburgh in the deal are pitcher Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan De Jesus and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands. Along with Hanrahan, the Red Sox also received infielder Brock Holt.

The Red Sox are moving towards a trade with the Pirates for Joel Hanrahan, according to multiple sources.

One official cautioned that there was "still work to be done" on the deal.

Hanrahan saved a total of 76 games over the last two seasons for the Pirates and is a year away from free agency.

It is unclear what the Pirates would be getting back in return.

One major league source said Pittsburgh is seeking a "significant return" for Hanrahan.

According to USA Today's John Perrotto, the Pirates have changed what they would want in return for Joel Hanrahan in possible trade scenarios.

Originally seeking pitching, Pittsburgh has shifted that focus since signing Francisco Liriano.

They are now targeting Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox and Dee Gordon from the Dodgers in talks as they search for a shortstop.

Hanrahan appears to be Boston's top target, and according to a report, they have engaged in talks with the Pirates about the reliever.

The Pirates are looking for a starting pitcher, and the Red Sox could possibly give up Franklin Morales or Alfredo Aceves. Pittsburgh may be thinking more along the lines of Felix Doubront, which would be a deal-breaker, according to the major league source.
