December 2010 - Pittsburgh Pirates Wiretap
Pirates Sign Atkins, Claim Thompson
The Pirates have signed infielder Garrett Atkins and claimed minor league left-hander Aaron Thompson off waivers. To make room for Thompson, Pittsburgh designated left-hander Wil Ledezma for assignment. Thompson was left unprotected by the Nationals, who acquired him from Florida for first baseman Nick Johnson in 2009. Atkins received a minor league contract and an invitation to their major league spring training camp.
Pirates Sign Atkins
The Pirates added infielders Garrett Atkins to the list of non-roster Spring Training invitees. By agreeing to terms on a Minor League contract, Atkins is reunited with his former Colorado manager, Clint Hurdle. Atkins played for the Rockies from 2003-09, before signing as a free agent with the Orioles last December.
Jays, Pirates, Rays Interested In Dotel
The Blue Jays, Pirates and Rays have all shown interest in reliever Octavio Dotel, according to a major league source. Dotel pitched for three teams -- the Dodgers, Pirates and Rockies -- this past season, making 68 appearances.
Overbay Gets One-Year Deal From Pirates
The Pirates have reached a one-year deal with Lyle Overbay. Pittsburgh plans to start Overbay at first base. "Lyle Overbay is a solid major league player and we expect him to have a positive impact on our club offensively, defensively and in the clubhouse," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said.
Correia, Pirates Reach Two-Year Agreement
The Pirates have reached an agreement with free agent pitcher Kevin Correia on a two-year, $8 million contract, according to a source. The deal, which includes unspecified incentives, is contingent on Correia passing a physical exam. Correia, 30, posted a 12-11 record with a 3.91 ERA in 2009 for San Diego before slumping to 10-10 with a 5.40 ERA last season.
Pirates Don't Tender Milledge Offer
The Pirates have decided not to tender an offer to outfielder Lastings Milledge. Milledge's lack of power cost him his starting job last season. He was acquired from the Nationals in a four-player trade in 2009 and hit .277 with four home runs and 34 RBIs last season. Milledge was rarely used during the final two months of the season.
Milledge Non-Tendered By Pittsburgh
The Pirates have non-tendered outfielder Lastings Milledge. The club is open to discussing a contract with Milledge even though he is now a free agent.
