Stanton Unlikely To Sign Long-Term Deal With Marlins

Sep 25, 2014 6:19 PM

The Marlins are listening to offers for Giancarlo Stanton, who they claim they aren't looking to move but are simply following club policy by answering phone calls.

Stanton will not be arbitration eligible until 2014 and isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season.

Miami is in no rush to trade Stanton. Yet, it remains highly unlikely he will agree to a long-term contract.

The Marlins haven't yet found a solution to their center field issue, but Justin Ruggiano appears to have the inside track on the job.

Bryan Petersen and Gorkys Hernandez are also internal candidates.

Ruggiano appears to be the first choice now, unless the Marlins find another option that has yet to come available.

Miami was interested in Peter Bourjos, who had been mentioned in trade rumors following the signing of Josh Hamilton, who gave Los Angeles a crowded stable of players across the outfield, first base and designated hitter.
