Big Hurt Returns To Oakland

Frank Thomas officially returned to the Bay Area on Thursday, agreeing to terms with the A's on a contract, as reported by Yahoo.com. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Thomas signed with the A's just four days after being released by the Blue Jays.

Rays Claim Dan Johnson Off Waivers

The Tampa Bay Rays claimed first baseman Dan Johnson off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Calvin Medlock was designated for assignment. Johnson, 28, had one at-bat for Oakland this season before the club designated him for assignment on April 9. The left-handed hitter had spent his entire professional career with the A?s organization including parts of four major league seasons (2005-08). Last year, his first full year in the majors, Johnson hit .236 (98-416) with a .349 on-base pct. and set career highs in home runs (18), RBI (62), runs scored (53) and walks (72). In 318 career major league games, he owns a .249 average with 42 HR, 54 doubles, and a .344 OBP. Johnson was drafted by Oakland in 2001 in the seventh round of the June Draft. He was named MVP of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League in 2004 with Sacramento. He made his major league debut in 2005, hitting .273 with 15 homers and 58 RBI in his rookie campaign. In 2006 he opened the year as Oakland?s starting first baseman and played 91 games, reaching the American League Championship Series as a member of the postseason roster.

Jays Ink Rios, Hill To Extensions

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed Alex Rios and Aaron Hill to long-term extensions, according to MLB.com. Rios received a six-year deal worth $64 million, while Hill signed a four-year pact that includes three different options. Hill, a second basemen, will receive $12 million over the life of the deal. The Blue Jays first began discussing the contract extension with Rios back in November.

Rays Give Wheeler New Contract

The Rays agreed to terms on a new contract with reliever Dan Wheeler on Tuesday, according to the Tampa Tribune. The deal is for three years and is worth at least $10.5 million over it's length. "We've worked hard to try and address our bullpen situation," Vice President Andrew Friedman said, "and we feel like Dan will be an important part going forward, getting outs late in games."

Orioles Sign Cintron To Minor League Deal

The Baltimore Orioles signed infielder Alex Cintron to a Minor League deal on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle. He batted .243 in 68 games with the White Sox last year. The Orioles immediately assigned him to Class AAA Norfolk.
