Royals Sign Miner To Minor-League Deal

The Royals have signed right-hander Zach Miner to a Minor League contract. Miner, 28, who has spent four years in the Majors, all with the Tigers, missed the entire 2010 season with a right elbow injury. A fourth-round selection by the Braves in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, was shipped to Detroit in 2005 in a deal that sent reliever Kyle Farnsworth to Atlanta.

Pirates Sign Atkins, Claim Thompson

The Pirates have signed infielder Garrett Atkins and claimed minor league left-hander Aaron Thompson off waivers. To make room for Thompson, Pittsburgh designated left-hander Wil Ledezma for assignment. Thompson was left unprotected by the Nationals, who acquired him from Florida for first baseman Nick Johnson in 2009. Atkins received a minor league contract and an invitation to their major league spring training camp.

Marlins Sign Nolasco To Extension

Ricky Nolasco has signed a three-year, $26.5 contract extension with the Marlins. The team announced the signing Friday. Marlins owner and CEO Jeffrey Loria calls Nolasco "an outstanding competitor." He is expected to earn $6 million in 2011, $9 million in 2012 and $11.5 in 2013.

Yankees Sign Pitcher From Steinbrenner's Youth Team

The Yankees have signed pitcher Leonel Vinas to a minor league contract. Vinas, a 19-year-old right-hander, was the ace of Hank's Yanks, a team sponsored by Hank Steinbrenner, co-chairman of the Yankees. He went to Tampa, Fla., last month to work out for several Yankees officials, including team vice president Billy Connors.

The Blue Jays have signed outfielder Corey Patterson and five other players to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training. Patterson hit .269 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 90 games for the Orioles last season. Right-handers Winston Abreu and Brian Stokes, lefties Sean Henn and Mike Hinckley, and catcher Ryan Budde were also signed to compete for jobs.

Harden Officially Returns To A's

The Athletics have finalized a one-year, $1.5 million deal with Rich Harden after the right-hander passed a physical. Harden went 5-5 with a 5.58 ERA in 20 appearances and 18 starts last season for the AL champion Rangers. He was designated for assignment after the regular season to give him his unconditional release after he struggled with injuries and control.

Austin Kearns has returned to the Indians by agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million contract. Kearns made Cleveland's roster out of spring training last season and was with the Indians until July 30, when he was dealt to the Yankees. He had discussions with the Indians about returning prior to the trade. "I knew there was a chance," Kearns said. "In the end, Cleveland was the right place to come back to and play. I enjoyed playing here. There are a lot of good guys on the team, guys I've maintained relationships with. They have a lot of talented young guys on this team. I enjoyed playing with everyone."
