Royals Sign Tsao To Minor League Contract

The Kansas City Royals have signed right-handed pitcher Chin-Hui Tsao to a 2008 minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training in Surprise, Ariz. Chin-Hui Tsao, 26, a native of Hualien, Taiwan, has spent parts of four seasons in the Majors with the Colorado Rockies (2003-05) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2007), recording a 4-4 record with a 5.40 ERA in 50 games, including eight starts. He was originally signed by the Rockies as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 7, 1999.

Astros Sign Villarreal To Two-Year, $2.85M Deal

The Houston Astros signed right-hander Oscar Villarreal to a two-year, $2.85 million contract Friday. The deal, worth $1 million in 2008 and $1.6 million in 2009, includes a $250,000 signing bonus and a $2 million club option for 2010. The 26-year-old Villarreal was traded by Atlanta for outfielder Josh Anderson last month. He was 2-2 with a save and a 4.24 ERA for the Braves last season.

Free agent outfielder Darin Erstad signed a one-year contract worth $1 million plus incentives with the Astros on Thursday. The 33-year-old Erstad, a two-time All Star in 11 seasons with the Angels, hit .248 with four home runs and 32 RBIs in 87 games last season for the White Sox.

Royals Sign Catcher Olivo To 1-Year Deal

Catcher Miguel Olivo signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. The 29-year-old was the Florida Marlins' primary catcher the past two seasons and batted .237 in 2007. Olivo was not tendered a contract by the Marlins before becoming a free agent. Florida acquired catching prospect Mike Rabelo from Detroit in a trade this month. The Royals and Olivo each hold options for the 2009 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 6-foot, 220-pound Olivo has thrown out 31.2 percent of attempted base stealers the past two seasons, the fourth-best in the National League. Olivio also has played for the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, hitting .239 in his career with 61 home runs and 224 RBI in 556 games.

Former Hanshin Tigers' right-hander Keiichi Yabu, who played for the Oakland Athletics in 2005, has agreed on a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants his management office said Tuesday. The 39-year-old Yabu will receive an invite to spring training next February with hopes of gaining a promotion to the majors.

Phils Sign Taguchi To One-Year Deal

The Phillies completed some last-minute holiday shopping Sunday by signing outfielder So Taguchi to a one-year contract with an option for 2009. A team official with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed the pact which is believed to be valued at slightly more than $1 million for 2008. Taguchi, 37, spent the past six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals batting .290 in 130 games with 15 doubles, three homers and seven stolen bases. The right-handed-hitting Taguchi has averaged 340 at-bats from 2005-07. He is a .284 hitter in 120 career pinch-hit appearances.

Ten years after throwing the first pitch in Roger Dean Stadium history, Cliff Politte is returning to the Cardinals? spring training campus to win a job. The Cardinals finalized a minor-league contract with the righthanded reliever and Vianney grad on Friday. Politte, who will turn 34 during spring training, won a World Series with Chicago in 2005 but is coming off a 2007 season erased by recovering from shoulder surgery. "I know (the Cardinals) organization, and I know I?ll be given a chance to win a job," said Politte, whose No. 15 is retired at Vianney. "I also know that I could come out and be dominant in spring and still need to go spend a month in Triple-A. I understand that. I hope to go to spring training and make the best impression I can."
