The Rays saved themselves a ton of money over the long run when they signed Evan Longoria to a marginal contract just 11 games into his Major League career.
Longoria is a premier player, but is only making $4.5 million this season.
That deal has led some to wonder whether or not the Red Sox will engage in extension talks with Will Middlebrooks, who was lighting up Fenway Park before a season-ending injury.
"Obviously it's a possibility," Middlebrooks said. "It's something I don't have experience in. It's not like I can say yes or no, especially right now, because it's something I'd have to sit down with them and my agent and let him do his job."
However, all indications are that the Red Sox wouldn’t go down that road this offseason with Middlebrooks, who is fewer than 300 plate appearances into his major-league career.
