The Boston Red Sox have claimed Travis Shaw off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Shaw has struggled for the Brewers, hitting just .191/.279/.337 in 56 games.

The 31-year-old was originally drafted by the Red Sox as a ninth-round selection out of Kent State in 2011.

The Cubs placed right-hander Jake Arrieta on unconditional release waivers Thursday, one day after he gave up seven runs and eight hits in the first inning of a 10-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

"He was struggling," president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. "Not getting deep into starts. We've been patient and tried to get through it and hopefully he [would] come out the other side and pitch better. We weren't there."

Former All-Star outfielder David Dahl was designated for assignment Monday by the rebuilding Texas Rangers, who added DJ Peters to their roster after getting the outfielder on a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
