Zach Britton Suffers Torn Achilles, Will Have Surgery

Dec 21, 2017 8:30 AM

The Baltimore Orioles suffered a major blow on Wednesday when they learned that Zach Britton ruptured his right Achilles sprinting during an offseason workout.

Britton is expected to have surgery on Thursday and will be sidelined for at least four months.

"It's probably the most frustrating thing I've experienced," the reliever said. "Last year [being on the disabled list was disappointing], but those were minor things. Now, this isn't something that's going to affect me long term. As soon as I have the surgery and rehab, I can get back to pitching like I can pitch. It's not career threatening or anything like that. But it's just going to be a real grind. I was really frustrated because I was feeling good with the forearm and the knee. I was about to throw bullpens. I was right where I wanted to be."

Britton will be eligible for free agency after the 2018 season.

Dec 15, 2017 7:47 AM

As the Baltimore Orioles mull a possible Manny Machado trade, the Chicago White Sox have emerged as the "most aggressive suitor" for the star infielder.

The White Sox are currently in the middle of a rebuild, so acquiring Machado could mean a variety of different things. They could sign him long-term, flip him this offseason or hold onto him and shop him next summer.

The New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants have also been linked to Machado.

Orioles Still Mulling Possible Manny Machado Trade

Dec 15, 2017 7:32 AM

The Baltimore Orioles are still mulling a potential trade of Manny Machado this offseason.

Machado will be a free agent after the 2018 season.

"We're talking to other clubs about potential deals and we'll follow up with them probably a couple today and then we'll follow up with them over the weekend," Dan Duquette said Thursday.

"We're going to leave here and then take a look at what our options are back in Baltimore. So don't expect us to make a deal later today.

"We're going to do what we can to put together the best club we can and obviously there's a lot of interest in the players on our roster who are going to be free agents, so we need to sort through the extent of that interest and see if a trade makes sense."

Kevin Gausman To Wear No. 34 To Honor Roy Halladay

Kevin Gausman is changing his jersey number to honor Roy Halladay, who died in a plane crash in November.

The Baltimore Orioles pitcher will wear the No. 34 starting next season "to honor Roy Halladay both on and off the field."

"To me, Roy gave me the inspiration that I could fulfill even my biggest of dreams -- being a pitcher just like him," Gausman wrote on Twitter. "... The loss of Roy was tragic and is saddening, but I feel honored to have watched everything he achieved."

Like Halladay, Gausman grew up in Colorado.
