Dodgers Place Clayton Kershaw On DL; Trade For Bud Norris

Jul 2, 2016 12:09 AM

After placing Clayton Kershaw on the disabled list, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired Bud Norris in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.

Norris last pitched on Sunday, tossing seven scoreless innings against the New York Mets. He is in line to start for the Dodgers on Friday against the Colorado Rockies, an appearance that Kershaw was slotted to make.

Kershaw received an epidural shot on his ailing lower back, leading to the DL stint.

"I think that he understands that's the best course of action," Dave Roberts said of Kershaw. "He's been our most valuable player. And when you lose a player to the disabled list like Clayton that you have counted on every fifth day for a start -- obviously that's out of all of our control.

"I know Clayton is very disappointed. But it's up to us to pick him up."

The Dodgers also received outfielder Dian Toscano, a player to be named later and cash considerations in the deal.

Los Angeles gave up minor-league pitchers Philip Pfeifer and Caleb Dirks.

Dodgers Remain In Wait Mode With Clayton Kershaw's Back

Jun 30, 2016 7:56 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers are waiting for information on Clayton Kershaw's back.

He returned to Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"I know he landed safely and will get some scans sometime," Dave Roberts said. "I should hear at some point and time."

Kershaw gave up four runs on nine hits Sunday night in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, only his second loss in 16 starts this season. He was treated for a lower back issue the next day.

The left-hander is scheduled to pitch against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, but it remains to be seen if he'll make the start.

"I haven't learned anything new today," Roberts said. "I know [pitching coach Rick Honeycutt] talked to him before he left. The idea to get him back, settled, to get the doctors' eyes on him, increase those chances for Friday. I think that we are still holding out hope. Things can always change, but I think that's where we're at right now."

Zack Greinke Leaves Start With Strained Oblique

Jun 29, 2016 8:47 AM

Zack Greinke left Tuesday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies after two innings with tightness in his left oblique.

Greinke hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score a run for the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second inning and left after a few warm-up pitches before the start of the third.

Chip Hale said there was no way he was going to risk his pitcher worsening the injury.

"It's something maybe he can maybe miss a start, possibly not miss a start; possibly at worst, maybe 15 days on the DL," Hale said. "You never know. But if you go out and really yank it bad, you're talking about a month or two, so we'll hope for a best-case scenario."

Steven Matz, Noah Syndergaard Pitching With Bone Spurs

Jun 28, 2016 7:32 AM

The New York Mets have a pair of pitchers -- Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard -- pitching with bone spurs in their elbows, according to a report.

The Mets are considering whether or not Matz will make his next start. Additionally, surgery hasn't been ruled out. He wouldn't be able to throw for six weeks after the procedure.

Syndergaard declined to comment on the report after Monday's start. The Mets aren't acknowledging the spur at the pitcher's preference, according to another report.

He hit triple digits against the Washington Nationals, but struggled with his control. Syndergaard only pitched three innings after allowing a season-high five runs and issuing three walks.

Clayton Kershaw Receiving Back Treatment

Jun 28, 2016 7:33 AM

Clayton Kershaw is receiving treatment for minor back discomfort, but he is expected to make his next start for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Dave Roberts insisted that the injury did not affect his pitcher's six-inning start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Kershaw gave up both his second-most hits (nine) and runs (four) on Sunday night.

Roberts called Kershaw's lower-back discomfort an "off-and-on issue" but sounded far from concerned about it, saying Kershaw "absolutely" would make his next scheduled start.

Stephen Strasburg will return to start Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers after skipping his last scheduled appearance with an upper back strain.

"If he's encouraged, I'm encouraged," Dusty Baker said. "Welcome back. He's been working hard with our training staff to get ready for his start. I'm sure he wouldn't have gone out there if he wasn't ready. He says he's ready, then we'll welcome him."

Bartolo Colon Leaves With Bruised Thumb After Four Pitches

Jun 22, 2016 8:38 AM

Bartolo Colon left Tuesday's start after throwing just four pitches because of a bruised thumb.

Colon was hit by a comebacker off the bat of Kansas City Royals leadoff man Whit Merrifield.

The New York Mets, who had decided to have Colon leapfrog Noah Syndergaard in the rotation, announced Colon suffered a right thumb bruise and that X-rays were negative.

Colon next is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. Terry Collins said the Mets would have a better idea on Wednesday about whether Colon, despite avoiding a fracture, might require a trip to a disabled list.
