The San Francisco Giants and representatives for Hunter Pence have begun discussions on a long-term contract.

The Giants are serious about locking Pence up before he is eligible for free agency after the season.

"There are conversations," Pence confirmed.

A source described the talks as "minimal" thus far and they probably won't accelerate until assistant general manager Bobby Evans returns from a trip to the Dominican Republic. The upcoming market is thin on power hitters, which could drive up Pence's value if the Giants aren't able to extend him.

San Francisco will lose their exclusive negotiating rights five days after the conclusion of the World Series.

Pence is hitting .290/.341/.482 with 22 home runs and 82 RBIs this season.
