Prince Fielder may have played in his final game as a member of the Brewers on Sunday night as the Cardinals won and advanced to the World Series.
Fielder grounded out in the eighth inning of what could be his final at-bat with the team, but not before the crowd at Miller Park gave him an ovation that led St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols to call time in an effort to allow Fielder to enjoy the moment.
The slugger will be a free agent this winter and it has been long believed that he'll sign elsewhere, in part because of Milwaukee's relative lack of financial resources.
"I had to clear the throat once, but it was all right," Fielder said. "I love these guys. I've been playing with most of them since I was 18. So, this organization has been great to me. Yeah, man. It's just been good. It's been real."
Fielder later said that he meant he was feeling emotional about this season being over -- not necessarily his career with the Brewers.
"I'm not thinking about that quite yet," he said. "I'm just trying to say good-bye to teammates. It's the offseason; you're not going to see them every day at 3 o'clock. I'm trying to say good-bye to them, trying to keep the throat clear."
