Cardinals third baseman David Freese was named the NLCS MVP on Sunday night as the team advanced to the World Series.
His unlikely journey to that point began four years ago when he was eating lunch at Burger King in Los Angeles. He received a call from an unknown number and allowed it to roll into his voicemail.
The caller was St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak, who had just traded for Freese and wanted to talk with him.
"The first thing I asked him was who I got traded for," Freese said. "He said [Jim] Edmonds. I was kind of bummed."
At the time, Freese was a 24-year-old playing Class A ball, but the Cardinals liked his approached that his desire to continue his baseball career.
