Without Football, Jameis Winston Might Be First-Round Pick

Dec 4, 2014 5:14 AM

Jameis Winston, the quarterback for the BCS champion Florida State Seminoles, is also a right-fielder for the college.

Winston also pitches for the Seminoles and is a switch-hitter.

Experts are already saying he would be the No. 1 player taken if he were eligible for this April's NFL Draft. Coming out of high school, Winston was regarded as a top-three-rounds pick as a baseball player.

"If football weren't a factor, Winston would have a solid chance to be a 2015 first-round pick in baseball. On the mound, he showed a 92-94 mph fastball and a promising slider. Because he has gained weight for football, he isn't the well above-average runner he used to be, but he's still a solid-average runner with a right fielder's arm," writes J.J. Cooper.

Angels Want To Keep First-Round Draft Pick

Sep 25, 2014 4:35 PM

The Los Angeles Angels have largely ignored any free agent tied to draft pick compensation this offseason.

They are committed to keeping their first-round pick in June's draft.

"We're committed to the idea of preserving our first-round pick," Jerry Dipoto said last month. "We haven't had one in the last two years and are notably thin in the Minor League system, particularly with upper-level pitching. … That first-round pick is something that's very important to us, just the impact you can get from it."
