The Giants released veteran infielder Mike Fontenot on Friday, leaving just two players in the mix for the starting job at second base.
Fellow LSU alum Ryan Theriot will make the team and compete with Emmanuel Burriss to replace Freddy Sanchez, who was placed on the DL Friday.
Manager Bruce Bochy has hinted that Burriss is the leading candidate to start. When asked about Burriss' chances before Friday night's game, Bochy smiled and said: "You guys can speculate."
