Return to MLB Prospect index Buster Posey - C Buster Posey Scouting Report - Posey was the fifth overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Giants. - Born in Georgia on March 27th, 1987. - Stands 6'2", 200 lbs and bats right-handed. - While at Florida State, Posey won the Golden Spikes Award and was an excellent student. - Posey began his collegiate career in Tallahassee as a shortstop but converted to catcher following his freshman season. He is an unfinished product defensively, but has the athleticism and intangibles to be fundamentally sound. - During his Junior season in 2008, Posey hit .463 with 26 homers, 21 doubles and four triples. He walked 57 times and struck out just 29 and clearly has an excellent sense of the strike zone. - Posey is much more of a line drive, hit to the gaps kind of hitter than a traditional slugger, but 20 HRs per season at AT&T Park is a realistic expectation. - He should consistently hit in the neighborhood of .300 and have a Joe Mauer kind of impact from the right side of the plate. - There are a few hitches in his swing, especially the timing of his rotation that will eventually change in order to maximize his potential. - Represented by Jeff Berry of CAA, Posey was signed to a record $6.2M bonus by the Giants. - Ranked ninth overall by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.
