Madison Bumgarner - LHP
Madison Bumgarner Scouting Report
- Bumgarner was the 10th overall selection by the San Francisco Giants in the 2007 MLB Draft.
- Born August 1st, 1989 and went to high school in North Carolina.
- Stands 6'5", 220 pounds.
- In A ball during the 2008 season, Bumgarner went 15-3 with a 1.46 ERA, 0.93 WHIP. As impressive as those numbers are, Bumgarner struck out 164 batters in 141.2 innings while walking just 21 batters. That kind of command from an 18-year-old is highly rare.
- Bumgarner was named Minor League Pitcher of the Year
- He features a low to mid 90's fastball that has good late movement and an effective slider and curve. Bumgarner hasn't been throwing offspeed pitches too long and still has a long ways to go in his development and trust of those pitches. The curve hasn't been very consistent and the slider has improved since coming out of high school. His change-up needs significant improvement.
- The fastball is his best pitch by a wide margin and he really has excellent velocity for a high school southpaw. He relied on the command and speed of the fastball to be so effective in Single-A in 2008.
- His three-quarters arm delivery and finish point is reminiscent of a shorter Randy Johnson.
- Extremely mature for his age with a great work ethic.
- Bumgarner's SWHIP of -0.227 placed him third amongst all minor leaguers during the 2008 season.
- Ranked third overall by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.
