Engel Beltre - OF
Engel Beltre Scouting Report
- Beltre was acquired from Boston along with David Murphy and Kason Gabbard for Eric Gagne at the 2007 trade deadline.
- Born November 1st, 1989 in the Dominican Republic.
- Excellent raw skills with the potential to be a dynamic power/speed player at the plate. His plate discipline is awful and rarely draws a walk, while he very frequently will strikeout though not an absolute obscene rate. Beltre has struck out with less frequency at each stop and as makes good, consistent contact, the BB/K ratio is more choice than ability.
- Beltre had a .336 BAbip in 2008.
- He is a natural in the outfield with a solid arm and is plenty quick enough to have excellent range.
- Very lean build, but could put up Grady Sizemore kind of numbers if he fills out his frame as he matures physically. He can have that kind of impact across the board as a leadoff batter with power, albeit with a lower OBP and very good CF defense.
- He has the potential to be a 20 homer, 40 double, 15 triple, 50 steal offensive player on an annual basis, but seems to be on the path of either being an All-Star (which he would or never stepping foot in a big league ballpark.
- Blue-collar worker despite his youth and off the charts natural ability.
- Ranked 68th by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.
- Beltre essentially was the 101st prospect in Baseball America's Top 100 for 2009.
