Martin Perez - LHP
Martin Perez Scouting Report
- Perez was signed for $580k in 2007 by the Rangers.
- Born on April 4th, 1991 in Venezuela.
- Has remarkable intangibles and intelligence, especially given his age.
- Features a four-seam fastball, an excellent sharp curve and change-up. His velocity is ordinary but has good movement and the speed of his fastball has already increased since he was signed. He is 6'0" and 165 lbs and will always be more of a finesse than power pitcher even if he is able to consistently throw a mid-90's fastball.
- Compared to a cross between Johan Santana and Greg Maddux by Jason Parks of Baseball Time in Arlington and it is easy to see the comparison when reading the insightful interview and watching clips of his frame and mechanics.
- He keeps the ball on the ground very well, which is valuable since he may end up pitching to contact unless he can consistently reach the mid-90's.
- His WHIP in 2008 was a little problematic and he yielded a .339 BAbip. He struck out 53 batters in 61.2 innings.
- Ranked 86th in Baseball America's Top 100 for 2009
