Return to MLB Prospect index

The Giants have done a horrible job developing their own positional prospects, but pitching has been a strength over the past few seasons, especially of late in Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez.

Pitching is still a strength in the pipeline with Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson, but Buster Posey figures to be their best homegrown positional player since Matt Williams. Posey is practically a lock to be the starting catcher in 2010 and figures to be the heart and soul of their offense.

Angel Villalona is still young and raw, but he could become an excellent pure slugger on the big league level with a few adjustments.

The past has been bleak, but the Giants' system hasn't looked this good since the mid-1980's.

Top Giants Prospects

1. Madison Bumgarner - LHP

Bumgarner has a rare level of velocity and command for a LHP and is easily one of the best two or three pitcher prospects in all of baseball.

2. Buster Posey

An excellent contact hitter with occasional pop, the Giants are expecting Buster Posey to be the catcher and focal point of their new era.

3. Angel Villalona - 1B

The Giants won a bidding war to sign Angel Villalona and has the potential to become one of the game's best right-handed sluggers.

4. Tim Alderson - RHP

Projecting as a middle of the rotation right-hander, Tim Alderson has tremendous command and a devastating curve.

5. Conor Gillaspie

A pure hitting third baseman who will hit over .300 more frequently than he hits 15 homers or better.

Other Players Worth Watching

- Henry Sosa - RHP,

Henry Sosa has great velocity, but his lack of command and secondary pitches make him a candidate to be more effective as a reliever than a starter.

- Nick Noonan, Clayton Tanner, Rafael Rodriguez, Waldis Joaquin
