By Douglas Benton It?s almost officially Summer now and that means baseball is the only game in town. The NHL and the NBA have finished their seasons and with the NFL pre-season still over a month away, let?s focus on baseball and see if the Angels could hold onto the number one spot for another week. 1. Los Angeles Angels (44-26) Shortstop Orlando Cabrera is sizzling with a .342 average on the season to go with 38 RBI and seven stolen bases. 2. Boston Red Sox (44-24) The Red Sox bounced back into form with a weekend sweep of the slumping Giants, but a continued slump for outfielder J.D. Drew should have some worried in Boston. 3. San Diego Padres (40-28) The Padres took two of three from the Chicago Cubs in a wild weekend series as their pitching continues to be dominant for them heading into late June. 4. Cleveland Indians (40-28) Did you known third baseman Casey Blake has a 26 game hitting streak? Don?t worry, not many people do. 5. Detroit Tigers (39-29) Starter Justin Verlander tossed a no-hitter on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers and is quickly separating himself as the best young pitcher in the game. 6. Arizona Diamondbacks (40-30) The Diamondbacks effectively ended the Sam Perlozzo watch with a weekend sweep at the Orioles. 7. Los Angeles Dodgers (39-30) Starter Jason Schmidt is headed to the disabled list again in yet another blow to the team?s biggest free agent signing over the winter. 8. New York Yankees (35-32) The Yankees have won 11 out of 12 games with the lone loss being a Roger Clemens? start. Things are looking good again in the Bronx. 9. Milwaukee Brewers (38-31) First baseman Prince Fielder (262 pounds) had an inside the park home run on Sunday as the Brewers continued their mediocre stay at the top of the NL Central. 10. New York Mets (37-30) They have lost 11 out of 13 games and starter Tom Glavine has looked terrible in his last two outings. So, when is Pedro Martinez coming back? 11. Minnesota Twins (34-33) Starter Kevin Slowey is 2-0 in four starts and has just six walks in 22.1 innings. 12. Atlanta Braves (37-33) Outfielder Andruw Jones is in one of the worst slumps of his career and during a contract year. He is defiantly playing his last season as a Brave. 13. Oakland Athletics (37-31) In 15 starts, Dan Haren has 14 quality starts, an 8-2 record and a 1.64 ERA. Hey Cardinals, how?s Mark Mulder working out? 14. Philadelphia Phillies (36-33) Outfielder Aaron Rowland is hitting .325 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI, while playing a solid centerfield in his contract year. 15. Colorado Rockies (35-34) They are 10-5 in June and showed their vast improvement with a convincing series win at the Boston Red Sox earlier in the week. 16. Seattle Mariners (35-31) Starter Jarrod Washburn has been a bulldog for the Mariners, leading the team in both starts and innings pitched. 17. Toronto Blue Jays (33-35) Losing starter A.J. Burnett will be a big blow to the Blue Jays, as they were just finding their stride with the return of Roy Halladay. 18. St. Louis Cardinals (30-36) Why isn?t anyone talking about first baseman Albert Pujols? He is hitting over .300, has more walks than strikeouts and has an OPS of .943. 19. Chicago Cubs (31-37) The Cubs got in another fight over the weekend as the whole tough guy act is getting old. Maybe they should try and fight their way over .500. 20. Florida Marlins (33-37) Third baseman Miguel Cabrera is putting up excellent numbers at .332, 16 homers and 51 RBI. 21. Houston Astros (30-39) They had an impressive three game sweep of the Seattle Mariners over the weekend to bolster their ranking. 22. Pittsburgh Pirates (30-39) First baseman Adam LaRoche is starting to turn things around as the Pirates need him in their young hitting core. 23. Washington Nationals (30-39) Since their 1-8 start, the Nationals are a much more respectable 29-31 as first year manager Manny Acta has begun to grow into the job. 24. Tampa Bay Devil Rays (30-37) Remember Carlos Pena? The first baseman is having a rebirth of a season by hitting .317, 16 home runs and 42 RBI. 25. Chicago White Sox (28-37) The White Sox have lost 16 out of 20 games and rumors are beginning to swirl that manager Ozzie Guillen might be firing number two. 26. Kansas City Royals (28-42) Manager Buddy Bell has kept the struggling Alex Gordon in the line-up despite only hitting .215 on the year. 27. San Francisco Giants (30-38) In the last two weekends, they have suffered embarrassing sweeps to the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. Not even Barry Bonds can keep fans coming to see this team. 28. Baltimore Orioles (29-40) The firing of manager Sam Perlozzo will give fans someone to blame, but it won?t end their list of problems going forward. 29. Texas Rangers (26-43) The Rangers stayed out of the cellar by beating the Cincinnati Reds two of out three times this weekend. 30. Cincinnati Reds (27-43) Cincinnati hotels better be ready for a stampede of general managers wanting to check out outfielders Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. in hopes of a mid-season trade.
